Dave Massey’s Huge Grand National 2025 Preview: Day 2 Tips

Grand National 2025 Tips: Handstands (1:45) NAP

Caldwell Potter started to justify a bit of his price tag when coming good to win the Jack Richards Novices Handicap at the Festival, his jumping exemplary in the main and that meant he was able to finish his race off much better than had previously been the case. Indeed, I’d go so far to say he was strong at the finish. However, it’s one thing winning a handicap off 144, another to win a Grade 1, and I prefer the claims of Handstands (1:45) here.

He’s impressed me physically each time I’ve seen him, looking a stronger horse each time, and there was plenty to like about the way he worried Arkle winner Jango Baie out of it in the Scilly Isles at Sandown last time. Wisely, connections decided Cheltenham would come too soon for them and this was nominated as a potential target. I don’t see a step back up to three miles and a furlong as any issue at all – he’s already won over 3m at Sandown and stamina will not be an issue, and he looks the one to beat.

Grand National 2025: Tripoli Flyer (2:55) – Take On

I fancy Supreme third Romeo Coolio is going to be too good for these, and I don’t particularly fancy taking him on, but there are reasons to try and get second favourite Tripoli Flyer (2.55) out of the frame here.  Firstly, a tendency to jump out to his right. All three hurdles wins to date have come on sharp, right-handed tracks, and this offers Tripoli Flyer a totally different test. If he jumps out to his right here he’s going to give a fair amount of ground away, and you can’t do that at this level and hope to get away with it.

It should also be pointed out that despite winning the Dovecote last time out, he bled from the nose, and was also a late withdrawal from the Supreme, self-certificating on the day. He may well have some physical issues as well, then, and the those two things together don’t make him a 3-1 shot in my book. There’s every chance he bombs out here and you can lay him fairly cheaply three places on the exchanges to find out.

Grand National 2025: Latenightpass (4:05) – Each Way

If you want something with excellent Aintree form, that’s nicely treated and is coming into this in good order, look no further than Tom Ellis’s Latenightpass (4.05). He was in front two out in the National last year but his stamina ran out pretty quickly at the last and he finished twelfth.

Fourth in the 2023 Foxhunters and the winner of it in 2022, he’s got the right run style for this, acts on most ground comes here after an excellent second to Stumptown in the X-Country at Cheltenham last time. On the same mark here, he ticks plenty of boxes for this, and looks sure to go well.
