Friday Racing Tips: Dave Massey’s Expert Wetherby Insight, October 31st 2025

Saturday Racing Tips

Dave Massey is back with his Friday Racing Tips, looking at Day 1 of Wetherby’s Charlie Hall Chase Meeting. Read Dave’s exclusive tips ahead of today’s racing from the West Yorkshire venue.

Friday Racing Tips: Wetherby Preview (Oct 31st 2025)

The one to beat here would be the improving High Dancer, a winner at Haydock for James Ewart back in March and only beaten half a length at Kelso on his final start for that yard. He’s now joined Nicky Richards, which is going to pay dividends for punters at some point, you feel, but Nicky hasn’t had a winner since April (for all his runners over the summer have been limited) and perhaps High Dancer will just need this to blow the cobwebs off.

Friday Racing Tips: Williethebuilder (Wetherby, 1.47)

The same can be said for Williethebuilder, with nearly everything I’ve seen from Christian Williams’s yard looking in need of an outing, The booking of Sean Bowen enhances his chance, but it’s a watching brief for me. You can argue a similar case for Glen Road, too, as the Sue Smith/Joel Parkinson yard tend not to rush theirs back, but Micky Hammond had a winner at Kelso coming back from a 185-day break earlier in the week and another that had been off over 200 days narrowly beaten, so he seems to have his horses well forward, so maybe now is the time to give Singapore Trip a try.

The negatives are easy enough to find, Singapore Trip not really finding his form in an interrupted season last year, but as a result he’s dropped to a very low-looking mark on the best of his form and this trip under these conditions looks ideal. With the yard seemingly finding a bit of form, and the markets likely to make him the rank outsider here, I’m going to try a small win bet on him if 16s or bigger.

Friday Racing Tips: The Bellhop 2:20 Wetherby

James Owen’s Ammes is going to be all the rage to win the Listed Wensleydale Hurdle after two easy successes at Sedgefield and Wetherby, but I do feel his homework has been overmarked somewhat, and long odds-on quotes make little appeal. He beat Lunar Orbit five lengths at Sedgefield and when the pair met again at Chepstow, Lunar Orbit pulled far too hard and was beaten turning in. Once he was out the way he was left with little to beat, and I thought both second and third at Chepstow were badly in need of the run too, and I don’t rate the form quite as highly as the figures suggest.

Conversely, I was very taken with The Bellhop’s easy win on debut at Fontwell and think he’s going to progress plenty on that today. He was well on top late in the piece there, coming right away and is clearly built for hurdles, plenty of size and scope about him, which could be seen within his solid jumping technique late at Fontwell. For all James Owen won this last year with Liam Swagger, we shouldn’t forget Gary Moore won this with the very useful Porticello a few years ago either, and at around 7-2 I’d be a player.

Friday Racing Tips: Duel Au Soleil (Wetherby, 4:05)

Plenty of these look fairly exposed by now and are struggling to get their heads in front, but that’s not the case with Ben Pauling’s only runner on the card, Duel Au Soleil (4.05), who makes his handicap debut here from what looks a fair mark, and is coming back from a break and wind surgery. Second twice at Stratford in the spring, on both occasions looking like further was required, he probably bumped into a pair of half-decent horses then and this does look a slightly easier assignment. Good ground suits, and he can prove good enough at the first time of asking in handicaps.
