Dubai World Cup: 5 of The Greatest Ever Winners at Meydan

Dubai World Cup

Meydan hosts the Dubai World Cup every year and it headlines the final meeting of the Dubai Racing Carnival. One of the world’s richest races, every trainer in the world wants to get their name on the trophy and it’s a very prestigious event, and attending by the great and good of the racing game.

Dubai World Cup: 5 of The Greatest Ever Winners at Meydan

The first ever running was back in 1996, where the American raider Cigar managed to come out on top. Here we take a look at five of the race’s most famous winners including Saeed bin Suroor’s record-breaking and ill-fated Dubai Millennium.

Dubai World Cup: Singspiel

The excellent globetrotter Singspiel got the job done in 1997, a year after he won big races in Canada and Japan. His Dubai World Cup victory was his first start on dirt, making the length-and-a-quarter success all the more impressive. Going on to have a successful time at stud, this horse is undoubtedly one of the greatest winners of the race and his trainer Sir Michael Stoute reportedly described this success as the crowning moment of his racing career.

Dubai World Cup: Arrogate

This Juddmonte-owned horse improved at an astronomical rate in his three-year-old season. He began his career with a defeat in a maiden at Los Alamitos, before progressing to get the better of California Chrome in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Victory in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park the following January was next on the agenda, which set him up perfectly for a Dubai World Cup bid. The Bob Baffert-trained superstar was a level above his opposition once again.

Dubai World Cup: California Chrome

California Chrome won the first two legs of the US Triple Crown as a three-year-old but could only manage fourth in the last leg, the Belmont Stakes. He was a touch inconsistent after that but was at his brilliant best when winning the 2016 Dubai World Cup. Racing wide in the early stages, he made smooth progress to take the lead with a furlong-and-a-half to go and pulled clear to score easily, with the Mike De Kock-trained Mubtaahij filling the runner-up spot.

Dubai World Cup: Thunder Snow

Thunder Snow made history back in 2019, becoming the first horse to win the race for a second time. Saaed bin Suroor’s bay got the better of Gronkowski by the narrowest of margins and earned an important place in the history of the race. His rivals gave him too much rope the year before and he powered clear to win by almost six-lengths having made all the running.

Dubai World Cup: Dubai Millennium

This Godolphin-owned legend made a mockery of his rivals back in 2000 and pulled clear to win by an impressive margin. He remains the only horse to have won the race in a time below the two-minute mark and it was an awesome display. We only saw this horse one more time on a racecourse after that and that came in Royal Ascot’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes and he made all to score by an even wider margin of eight-lengths.
