Nunthorpe Stakes Day at York Ebor 2024: Dave Massey’s Expert Preview

York Ebor Meeting 2025

Dave Massey is back with his expert insight at York’s Ebor Meeting on Day 3, on Nunthorpe Stakes Day, and the Gp 1 sprint the undoubted highlight on a fabulous afternoon of racing.

Nunthorpe Stakes Day: Regional (3.35) – Back

The purists will tell you that the Juddmonte was the race of the week and maybe they’re right, it was certainly a race for the ages, but for me this years renewal of the Nunthorpe looks an absolute fracker and with the wind likely to be behind them, it isn’t hard to see a new track record being set today.

But by whom? Big Evs and Asfoora go again after their battle in the King George at Goodwood where Big Evs came out in too but he’s a tougher task at the weights today, and Asfoora is expected to take her revenge, but I have a feeling that this is the test that might bring the best out in Regional and he’s a sporting bet to topple the big guns.

He’s a length to find with Asfoora on their King Charles III running at Ascot and the weights today are the same, but this faster track, along with Regional’s potentially good draw in stall 2 (far side again favoured in sprints this week) give him a chance of turning it around. It’s easy to forget he’s already a Group 1 winner, having taken the Sprint Cup at Haydock last year, so he’s up to the task if it all drops right. A better chance than the market suggests.

Nunthorpe Stakes Day: Point Lonsdale (2.25) – Take On

I think, had Point Lonsdale looked like he needed further before today I might have been more inclined to look at his chance more favourably, but having yet to race behind 13½f means that the stamina doubt is somewhat greater than it might have been and it is a worry.

I get why they are having a go, with his half-brother Broome eventually wanting two miles, and although he romped away with the Ormonde Stakes at Chester earlier in the season, that really didn’t take a lot of winning and I think he’s better judged on his runs at 12f this season which, whilst clearly very good, aren’t any better than what Gregory or Vauban have achieved, and they have already proven their stamina.  At around the 3.0 mark he looks a lay against some proven grinders.

Nunthorpe Stakes Day: Euchan Glen (1.50) – Each Way

His best days are behind him and the pipe and slippers probably beckon at the end of the season (probably…) but there’s no denying that Euchan Glen is in cracking form at present and back at a track where he’s had one of his finest moments (and many, many other terrific handicap efforts) he looks nailed on to go well again.

He bounced back to form at Ayr in June, coming out on top with a game half-length win and followed that up with a very credible sixth in the John Smiths Cup, just getting hampered late on as he got a little tired. He lost nothing in defeat when beaten a length by the fast-improving Align The Stars at Goodwood last time and conditions here look ideal. He can reward his legion of fans again with each-way support.
