A new year always brings fresh opportunities for jockeys to reach a new level and we’ve picked out 5 Jockeys to Follow in 2025.
Five Jockeys to Follow in 2025
Some will be seeking to break through into the mainstream, while others are perhaps at a later stage of their developments but are well set to progress once again.
Jockeys to Follow: Ben Jones
Ben Jones had a breakthrough campaign last season and proved his worth when filling the boots of the injured Kielan Woods at the Ben Pauling yard. The Welshman rode his way to the top of the tree and usurped Woods’ position once he returned from injury. Jones will get plenty of opportunities to ride for Pauling, who has established himself as a trainer to follow, particularly in the novice chasing department.
Jukebox Man provided the pair with a Grade 1 success in the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, Jones’ first at the top level. That’s unlikely to be the last we hear from him and 2025 could be an even bigger year.
Jockeys to Follow: Billy Loughnane
This teenage sensation has been riding at a high level since the age of 16 and has gained the support of a number of top owners and trainers. That is confirmed by the fact that Billy Loughnane had 1170 rides in Britain in 2024, registering a total of 162 winners.
Loughnane was keeping some elite company, finishing third in the turf and all-weather standings, and comfortably ahead of both Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand. He’s only going to get better with age and one would imagine he’ll be getting a major job in the not too distant future.
Jockeys to Follow: Dylan Johnston
Dylan Johnston is a 3lb claimer that has already caught the eye of influential owner Dai Walters and has ridden plenty of winners in those famous blue and white silks. Olly Murphy and Sam Thomas are two of his strongest backers and he has already ridden 21 winners this season.
It would be unwise to rule out more and although it won’t be long before he rides out his claim, one would imagine the opportunities won’t dry up. 2025 could be an even bigger year for the young rider and he’s expected to continue on an upward trajectory.
Jockeys to Follow: Freddie Gingell
Nephew of top trainer Joe Tizzard, Freddie Gingell is attached to the Paul Nicholls yard and he’s been riding plenty of winners over the last couple of seasons. He’s still a teenager but he rides like a much more experienced jockey and that is the key to his continued success.
Gingell won the very valuable Paddy Power Gold Cup for Nicholls back in November and is operating at a very healthy strike-rate of 21 per cent. It would be a surprise if he fails to pass the 50 winner mark, having ridden 27 already, and surely both his boss and uncle will provide him with many opportunities over the next 12 months.
Jockeys to Follow: Tommie Jakes
Attached to the George Boughey yard, apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes is still claiming 5lb but that’s expected to change very quickly. He’s a tidy rider and a total of 29 winners in 2024 is a more than respectable yield.
George Boughey’s operation continues to grow and that’s expected to continue this year, which surely means that Jakes will have plenty of opportunities. There weren’t many more promising young riders than him last season and there should be plenty more wins to come.
