The Curragh Races, Friday May 24th
It’s a busy day of action on Friday with the Flat season getting into full swing and there are five Flat cards as well as a couple of jumps meetings either side of the Irish Sea.
Here, we focus on day one of The Curragh Races Guineas meeting and there are some competitive handicaps to look at on Friday evening.
We’ve picked out three selections to follow at The Curragh Races, including the Irish Lincolnshire winner who looks primed for another big run.
7.20 The Curragh Races – Chazzesmee
The one mile Premier Handicap on The Curragh’s card is run over the same course and distance as the Irish Lincolnshire and the winner of that race this year, Chazzesmee, looks capable of going well again in this contest.
The son of Excelebration was well backed on the aforementioned seasonal return, going off at 3/1 for the big-field handicap here in March and that was his third win in his last four starts. He’s suffered an interrupted career since 2022, running just six times but he’s not run a bad race in that time.
He tried to follow up his success at The Curragh in the Doncaster at Lincoln when well found in the market again (starting price of 5/2) and it was a brave effort to finish fifth. That run is worth marking up given that he finished lame and he should be primed for a big run here, having been freshened up with a two-month break.
A career high mark of 100 isn’t a major concern given that he’s seemingly still progressing and he’s not finished outside of the first four in double-figure fields in three previous runs at this venue.
7.50 The Curragh Races – Heavenly Power
The trio of runners that Eddie Lynam sends to the six-furlong handicap all have claims but it’s Heavenly Power who makes most appeal.
The six-year-old is a dual course and distance winner who was only narrowly denied by re-opposing stablemate Jon Riggens here in August. He probably would have won that day without idling in the closing stages.
Expect him to come on from his comeback run when the ground was too testing and he should go close for a yard which excels with their older sprinters.
8.20 The Curragh Races – Ferrybank
Twenty-three runners have been declared for the finale, another one mile handicap on the card, but it may not be quite as competitive as the numbers suggest.
Ferrybank appears to have rock-solid claims having really turned a corner on the all-weather this winter. He recorded two wins at Dundalk, including a first success at this trip, and he went close to getting a first turf win when back on the grass at Leopardstown last time.
That was a game effort from the front and there’s a chance he’ll be able to dominate these rivals on this less demanding track. Stall 18 isn’t ideal for his preferred tactics but he’s hard to knock bar that factor and he’s still on a workable handicap mark, despite another 3lb rise.
