Premier League - Anfield Stadium

In this article, we have selected the top five greatest signings Liverpool FC have made during the Premier League era.

Top 5 Greatest Liverpool FC Signings of the Premier League Era

It’s fair to say it is very difficult to cut the list down to just five players and we’ve taken into account their impact and the transfer fees paid. Special mentions to some of the players who just missed out on the top five – Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Joel Matip and Didi Hamann.

Top 5 Liverpool FC Signings: Mohamed Salah

When he signed for Liverpool for £36.5million in June 2017, a few eyebrows were raised at Mohamed Salah moving to Anfield, especially after a failed stint at Chelsea. But seven-and-a-half years later the Egyptian star is being discussed as one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Salah has won a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Champions League trophy, a Super Cup and Club World Cup during his time with the Reds. His individual statistics are phenomenal, scoring 23 or more goals in each of his seven completed seasons and is already on 21 for the 2024-25 campaign.

Top 5 Liverpool FC Signings: Virgil van Dijk

The current Liverpool skipper is by far the most expensive signing on the list, but the impact Virgil van Dijk has had makes the £75million look like money well spent. The Dutchman was a long-term target of the Anfield hierarchy and, since joining in January 2018 from Celtic, he has been a key figure for a period of success. Van Dijk has won seven major trophies since arriving on Merseyside and was handed the captain’s armband when Jordan Henderson left the club in the summer of 2023.

Top 5 Liverpool FC Signings: Andy Robertson

Another player in the list who is still part of the current set-up is Andy Robertson, who is in his eighth season as a Liverpool player. The 30-year-old had only played two seasons in the Premier League with Hull City before making the switch for a bargain £8million fee. He had to wait for his chance under Jurgen Klopp, but he has since been an integral part of the Reds’ squad, which has asked both full-backs to be key figures from an attacking perspective.

Top 5 Liverpool FC Signings: Sami Hyypia

Not many people had heard of Sami Hyypia before he put pen to paper on a Liverpool deal in the summer of 1999. He had played in his homeland of Finland and in the Netherlands before moving to the Premier League and cost a mere £2.6million. The centre-back built an impressive partnership with Stephane Henchoz, before teaming up with Jamie Carragher and being named as captain in 2002.

Hyypia played a key role in helping the Reds win the Champions League, with the dramatic final victoryover AC Milan in Istanbul. He also won two FA Cups, two League Cups and a UEFA Cup during his 10 years on Merseyside.

Top 5 Liverpool FC Signings: James Milner

At the age of 29, Liverpool decided to bring in James Milner on a free transfer after a successful stint at Manchester City. Eight years later, the former Leeds United and Newcastle United man had made himself a Reds legend and won six major trophies during his time at Anfield. Milner made 230 appearances for the Merseysiders and won his only European Cup during his time with the club.
