Premier League Preview: Best Bets, Dec 30th 2025

As we reach the halfway stage of the Premier League season, the fixture list throws up a potentially massive game in the title race. A win here would take Villa level on points with their opponents; defeat leaves them with a six-point gap to make up in the second half of the campaign and – for many – would be the result which kills their surprise challenge. Villa have been friends of this column this season and I see no reason to abandon them now.

Premier League Best Preview: Arsenal v Aston Villa

They beat Arsenal in the reverse fixture last month and have won every game since. They are now on an 11-match win streak. To be fair, Arsenal have responded to that loss by also winning all three league games since, although they have been far from convincing. There was an injury-time winner against lowly Wolves, a 1-0 victory at Everton (via a gift of a penalty) and, on Saturday, a 2-1 win over Brighton, one only secured by a wonder save from David Raya.

In short, the margins have been tight with little room for error. With the level increasing here, they may not be so fortunate. Arsenal remain injury-hit, although Gabriel may start for the first time since November 8 in this one, and that has to encourage a Villa side brimming with confidence. Villa are 6.0 for a 12th successive victory but, as I did on Saturday, preference is to back them in the double-chance market at 2.3.

Premier League Preview: Sunderland v Man City

Sunderland remain unbeaten at home but the layers expect that run to end here against a rejuvenated City. I have to say, I agree. The Black Cats have drawn both games since six of their squad departed for the Africa Cup of Nations but worrying signs have been in evidence.

They’ve conceded plenty of shots this season, even with a full quota, but at Brighton they gave up 16 and then on Sunday they shipped 17 against a Leeds side who were the better team for long periods. City, with eight wins in a row in all competitions, are more likely to make them pay and the man to follow in the goalscorer markets is Tijjani Reijnders.

While Erling Haaland remains the main man, his Dutch team-mate has now scored in three of his last four Premier League starts. I can see City dominating this game and with Reijnders averaging 2.61 shots per 90 minutes this season, he should have chances to add to his tally.

Premier League Preview: Man Utd v Wolves

There have been few bright spots for Wolves this season but Mateus Mane was a real eyecatcher at Anfield on Saturday. The 18-year-old was a real livewire up front and got involved in everything Wolves did going forward. In the end, he struck four shots – something few have managed at Anfield in recent years – and looks worth following again here.

United rejigged their formation on Boxing Day, going to four at the back due to injury issues, and while they did manage a clean sheet against a toothless Newcastle, you do wonder if there will be some unfamiliarity in their back-line here, given absentees and players having had the 3-5-2 system drilled into them over and over again by Ruben Amorim. Essentially, Mane may well be able to trouble this defence like he did Liverpool’s and even money about the England youth international hitting two shots looks worth an interest.
