The first of the two Euro 2024 Semi-Finals takes place on Tuesday evening, as Spain and France prepare to clash in Munich. Both nations are two-time winners of the Henri Delaunay Trophy and both remain unbeaten heading into the last four.
It’s being built as a battle between two different styles – the free-flowing attacking Spaniards against the stubborn, counter-attacking French. But which nation will make it through to the final on Sunday to face either England or the Netherlands? Read our full preview, with two recommended wagers ahead of this evening’s clash.
Euro 2024 Semi-Finals: Scalded Spain
It’s fair to say that Spain have been the most impressive team of the tournament to date and an extra-time win over hosts Germany will have further boosted belief in the camp. Luis de la Fuente’s men are the joint top-scorers, with 11 goals in five games, and are ranked fourth in the possession stats (57.2%).
The Rojas do have issues though going into Tuesday evening’s semi, with the coach having to shuffle his pack due to injury and suspension. The experienced Dani Carvajal will sit out the clash after the Real Madrid full-back was sent off in the quarter-final victory in Stuttgart. He’s not the only defensive regular missing, with centre-back Robin Le Normand also suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament against Germany.
Losing two experienced players would already be a setback, but Spain will also be missing a key player in front of the back four. Pedri was injured, following a tackle by Toni Kroos, in the quarter-final and will sit out Tuesday’s game and almost certainly the final, should Spain progress. The Barcelona youngster has been part of an impressive midfield triangle along with Fabian Ruiz and Rodri, so his presence will definitely be missed.
Euro 2024 Semi-Finals: France Foundations
Didier Deschamps’ team are not the same side that reached the World Cup final two years ago, but they still have a solidity and pace in abundance. Les Bleus have just three goals to their name in the tournament, two have been own goals and the other was a penalty from Kylian Mbappe.
The new Real Madrid signing has not looked the same player, having been forced to wear a face mask after breaking his nose in France’s opener against Austria. Mbappe hasn’t looked comfortable, but he still poses a major threat to any defence and will be buoyed by the changes that Spain will need to make. At the other end of the pitch, France lead the way in tournament clean sheets – with four shutouts in five games.
Clearly, Deschamps believes being hard to break down and then hitting teams on the break at pace is the way to go. That is highlighted by the possession stats, where the World Cup runners-up are ranked just 13th with 50.4%. It’s also worth noting that France have won two of the last three meetings between these two sides, with the last clash seeing Les Bleus win 2-1 in the Nations League in 2021.
