The Three Lions continue with their Nations League progress with England v Finland in theory a formality after the weekend’s 2-0 success over Ireland. Tuesday evening’s contest isn’t a fixture of huge significance in terms of league standing, but it could be a pivotal tie in the future of Lee Carsley. The 50-year-old takes charge of his second match as interim boss of the Three Lions and it will be interesting to see if Carsley stays on in the dugout beyond Tuesday’s tie.
England v Finland: Three Lions Ready to Roar
England were 2-0 winners over Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, but the Three Lions were more impressive than that scoreline suggests. Carsley’s side created numerous clear cut chances to find the net in Dublin, in a game where England hit 16 efforts on goal and produced an expected goals tally of 2.67.
Ireland aren’t one of the European elite, but the Boys in Green were well motivated for a home tie against their near neighbours and England offered Heimir Hallgrimsson very little encouragement. Finland travel to Wembley having conceded 14 goals in their last five matches and that includes shipping four against Wales and Portugal and three when taking on Greece on Saturday.
Even San Marino were able to find the net against Markku Kanerva’s men in a Euro 2024 qualifier last year and that doesn’t inspire confidence in Finland keeping England at bay. Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze are all available to Carsley in a formidable Three Lions attack and England could hit Finland hard at Wembley. That total goals line has been set at 3.5 on Tuesday evening and getting long of that mark looks the best way to play this Nations League tie.
England v Finland: Super Saka
It’s possible to make a strong case for five or six England players finding the net against Finland, given it’s likely to be one-way Three Lions traffic at Wembley, but Saka looks the pick of the bunch. Kane looks set to lead the England line, but perhaps Finland’s low block may not see the Bayern Munich man to best effect on Tuesday.
It’s likely that pace and penetration from wide areas will cause the Eagle-owls the biggest issue and there are few players more effective from those positions than Saka. The Arsenal man has already opened his Premier League account this season, the 23-year-old hit three shots at goal against Ireland on Saturday and Saka looks the man to open the scoring in north-west London.
