The new PL season is almost a third of the way through and enough time has passed for the league table to take shape, but there has been plenty of Premier League transfer flops and fingers burnt by plenty of chairmen in the top-flight.
Premier League Transfer Flops: 5 Biggest Disappointments 2024/2025
An analysis of the summer transfer window can also begin almost three months after it slammed shut. Here we pick out five players who have failed to live up to the expectations of their pre-season moves.
Premier League Transfer Flops: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Chelsea)
Enzo Maresca was not the only person to move from Leicester City to Chelsea this summer as he brought his star midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with him. The 26-year-old registered 14 assists and 12 goals in the Championship last term but has found his playing time severely limited in west London.
The midfielder has played just 46 minutes of Premier League football since the move and looks likely to be one of many victims of the Blues’ scattergun recruitment approach from the summer.
Premier League Transfer Flops: Joshua Zirkzee (Man United)
Expectations were high for Joshua Zirkzee following his summer move from Bologna to Manchester United. The forward even began the scoring for the Premier League season as he netted the Red Devils’ only goal against Fulham in the curtain-raiser.
However since then the player has failed to find the net in 16 appearances for his new side as they have struggled this term. Erik Ten Hag signed the Dutchman but has now been relieved of his duties and replaced by new boss Ruben Amorim, so Zirkzee will have to hope that he can improve under the new manager or he may join the long line of post-Sir Alex Ferguson disappointments at Manchester United.
Premier League Transfer Flops: Ben Brereton-Diaz (Southampton)
Ben Brereton-Diaz has struggled for success since his breakout seasons at Blackburn Rovers. He earned himself a big move to Villarreal, but was loaned back to English football after just 20 appearances for the Yellow Submarine in which he failed to score.
A stint on loan at Sheffield United last term ended with the Blades relegated and in the summer the Chilean striker made his move to Southampton. He has not started a league game in the last two months for Russell Martin’s side and is yet to find the net.
Premier League Transfer Flops: Raheem Sterling (Arsenal)
Raheem Sterling’s late loan move to Arsenal from Chelsea was one of the shocks of the transfer window but the forward has struggled to make an impact at his new club. He has started just two league games and in one of those was replaced after 30 minutes following William Saliba’s red card.
Premier League Transfer Flops: Niclas Fullkrug (West Ham)
West Ham’s bad luck with signing strikers shows no signs of abating as German forward Niclas Fullkrug has made minimal impact for the Hammers since arriving in the summer. He failed to find the net in his first four appearances for the club and since then has been on the sidelines dealing with an Achilles issue as Julen Lopetegui’s side have struggled through the early part of the campaign.
