Premier League Appraisal: Top Clubs 2024
As we prepare to ring in 2025, how will the Premier League’s big clubs look back on 2024?
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Manchester City
Crowned Premier League champions for the sixth time in seven seasons and top of the table again at the end of October, Pep Guardiola’s well-oiled winning machine have enjoyed a largely dominant 12 months.
Largely, but not completely, and the calendar year certainly hasn’t ended as anyone around the Etihad had expected.
There were blips earlier in the year – the loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals and defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup final – but they had retained their league title and started this season off in a hurry.
However, the last two months have been painful at home and in Europe, leaving City’s future in this campaign’s Champions League on a knife-edge and out of the title race, according to the manager himself.
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Arsenal
The year has been another frustrating one for Arsenal, whose re-emergence as a trophy hunter hasn’t actually yet yielded any silverware.
Liverpool beat them in the FA Cup, Bayern Munich pipped them in the Champions League and Man City did for them in the league.
Ever the bridesmaid, that’s back-to-back Premier League runners-up spots and they will be fearing a hat-trick (at best) after slipping behind Liverpool and losing Bukayo Saka to a disruptive injury.
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Liverpool
None of the top teams will look back on 2024 with quite as much fondness as Liverpool.
Dismayed that Jurgen Klopp was heading out of Anfield in the summer (he signed off by landing the League Cup in February), in stepped Arne Slot and the only way has been up.
Incredibly, they have lost just once since April, winning six out of six in the Champions League and are odds-on for a first league title since 2020.
They didn’t manage to nail down Mohamed Salah to a new contract, but that’s a minor irritant in a fabulous year.
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Tottenham
It has rarely been dull supporting Tottenham Hotspur but 2024 has been on another level of entertainment.
Ange Postecoglou got Spurs to fifth last season but since August they have produced everything from thumping wins at both Manchester giants to hideous defeats by the likes of Bournemouth and Ipswich.
They hit Southampton for five; a week later shipped six against Liverpool.
Spurs’ fans have been waiting 16 years for a trophy and a week for consistency. It’s anyone’s guess if 2025 provides either.
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Chelsea
Chelsea have been the polar opposite of Spurs, a side who couldn’t find any consistency after the remarkable spending sprees of several different managers.
But they finished 2023/24 with five straight league wins to sneak into Europe, leaving Enzo Maresca to take over a side who are back in the top-four conversation once again.
Premier League | Top Clubs 2024 | Manchester United
And finally, from the fun and frolics of Spurs and Chelsea to the soap opera that is Manchester United, and a chance to reflect on a year in 2024 that has to rank as a massive missed opportunity.
New owners, new investment, new promises but it’s been the same old inconsistency under first Erik ten Hag and, most recently, Ruben Amorim.
Beating rivals City to win the FA Cup was supposed to be the catalyst. Instead the same questions are being asked about a team who started 2024 in eighth, and end it in 14th.
Not quite the progress that anyone at Old Trafford had envisaged.
