Premier League Manchester City v Spurs Preview

Saturday’s late kick-off sees two of the biggest clubs in England battle it out at the Etihad Stadium as reigning champions Manchester City host Tottenham.

City boss Pep Guardiola recently signed a new contract with the Cityzens, extending his stay with the club for at least another two years, and he will be hoping this news will reignite City’s season – with the champions having lost each of their last four in all competitions.

Spurs, meanwhile, head into this meeting in tenth but, with just three points separating themselves and third-placed Chelsea, any form of positive result could be a major boost to their continental ambitions.

Premier League Man City v Spurs: Goals at both ends in tight contest

With both City and Spurs on losing runs leading into the international break, it is difficult to see either side coming away from this contest with a clean sheet.

The Citizens have been surprisingly leaky in defence this season, conceding 13 goals across their 11 Premier League matches so far, and Guardiola’s side have only shut out league opposition on two occasions this season.

Tottenham’s record is identical to City’s in terms of goals conceded and number of clean sheets registered in the league, while their 2-1 loss at home to Ipswich Town before the international break will have been a major hit to morale in the white half of north London.

Recent meetings between the two sides at the Etihad have produced thoroughly entertaining affairs, with 17 goals scored across the last three head-to-heads in Manchester. Both teams to score provided winners in each of these and another could well be on the cards on Saturday.

Premier League Manchester City v Spurs: Gvardiol to try his luck again

While plenty of focus will rightly be placed on Erling Halland to provide the goods in front of goal, City’s depth in quality means that any one of the Norwegian’s supporting cast will fancy their chances of testing the opposition goal.

One man in particular that has shone this season in front of goal is Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol, with the former RB Leipzig man netting three goals so far in the Premier League.

Only Haaland and John Stones possess a higher shots on target percentage than the 22-year-old (43.8%) and, after testing the goalkeeper in three of his last five league appearances, he should pose a threat to the Lilywhites’ backline.

Premier League Manchester City v Spurs: Cards Galore After Encounter

Both sides will be desperate to end their recent run of poor form and so an intense, physical spectacle could be in store on Saturday.

Ten yellow cards have been shown across the last two league head-to-heads at the Etihad Stadium and, with both City’s and Tottenham’s most recent matches providing over five yellow cards, another feisty affair looks to be on the cards.
