Premier League Final Day Thrills: 5 Unforgettable Moments in History

Man City v Southampton

Top Five Premier League Final Day Shocks

This season’s Premier League title race will go down to the wire as Arsenal attempt to depose champions Manchester City on the last day of term.

City narrowly avoided final-day shocks to clinch the title in 2011-12, when Sergio Aguero scored his famous injury-time winner against QPR, and 2021-22, when they battled back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2.

We have picked out five other memorable final-day scorelines from Premier League history, starting with a nail-biting win for Everton in May 1994.

Premier League Final Day: Everton 3 Wimbledon 2

The Toffees started the final day of the 1993-94 season in the relegation zone, vying for survival with Sheffield United.

Things were looking very bleak for Everton when they trailed Wimbledon 2-0 inside 20 minutes at Goodison Park while the Blades took a 2-1 lead against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

However, a brace from Graham Stuart and a Barry Horne strike helped the Toffees fight back to win 3-2 and their top-flight status was sealed by Mark Stein’s 90th-minute winner for Chelsea against the Blades.

Premier League Final Day: Manchester United 1 West Ham 1

Manchester United supporters found themselves in the unfamiliar position of cheering on Liverpool as the 1994-95 title race reached its climax.

The Reds did their bit by beating Blackburn 2-1 at Anfield so a United win at West Ham would secure a third consecutive Premier League title for the Red Devils.

United, though, fell behind to a Michael Hughes goal in the first half at Upton Park. Brian McClair equalised soon after the break but the title contenders missed a host of chances and were unable to secure victory, meaning Blackburn won the league by a single point.

Premier League Final Day: Bradford 1 Liverpool 0

Bradford kicked off the 38th round of fixtures of the 1999-2000 Premier League season inside the bottom three on goal difference and few pundits gave them a chance against Liverpool at Valley Parade.

The Reds’ starting line-up included Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Dietmar Hamann and Sami Hyypia while Bradford were hoping for inspiration from Lee Sharpe, Dean Windass and former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders.

Paul Jewell’s Bantams made a dream start thanks to a 12th-minute header from centre-back David Wetherall and they refused to allow Liverpool back into the game.

Wimbledon’s 2-0 defeat at Southampton ensured that unfancied Bradford stayed up at the expense of the Dons and club chairman Geoffrey Richmond declared it was “one of the greatest days in football”.

Premier League Final Day: West Brom 5 Manchester United 5

Sir Alex Ferguson enjoyed plenty of dramatic late goals during his managerial career but the boot was on the other foot in his 1,500th and final match as Manchester United boss in May 2013.

United, who had already wrapped up the title, cruised into a 3-0 lead against West Brom inside half an hour at The Hawthorns.

Fergie’s men led 5-2 heading into the final ten minutes but Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku completed his hat-trick either side of a goal from Youssouf Mulumbu to make it a memorable day for any punters who backed the 5-5 correct score.

Premier League Final Day: Stoke 6 Liverpool 1

Two years after Ferguson’s farewell, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard played his final game for the club at the end of the 2014-15 season.

The Reds may have been hoping for an easy ride against a Stoke side with nothing to play for but the Potters produced a devastating first-half display at the Britannia Stadium.

Mame Biram Diouf scored twice and goals from Jonathan Walters, Charlie Adam and Steven Nzonzi gave Stoke a 5-0 lead at the break.

Gerrard claimed a rather hollow consolation goal in the 70th minute but former Reds striker Peter Crouch completed the scoring to seal a stunning 6-1 win for the hosts.
