Premier League Midweek Football Tips

Sunderland did the business for our Andy Schooler at the weekend – here’s his midweek football tips for the Premier League’s Matchday 21 fixtures.

Midweek Football Tips: Premier League Best Bets

I’ve picked out Villa for the team selection in this column on several occasions this season. OK, they let us down at Arsenal last week (had they taken their first-half chances that game could well have turned out different) but they’ve largely delivered for their backers this term.Unai Emery’s men put that Emirates drubbing behind them at the weekend by beating Nottingham Forest comfortably enough and so they’ve now won 18 of their last 21 games. Getting 2.15 about them winning here looks good business.

Midweek Football Tips: Crystal Palace v Aston Villa

Emery’s deep squad has allowed him to rotate regularly and Villa still look fresh, but Palace seem to be a jaded team right now with many of their key players having played too often. Injuries are mounting up at Selhurst Park with Daniel Munoz and Chris Richards big misses in defence. Munoz’s back-up, Nathaniel Clyne, also limped off at the weekend. Further forward, the lively Ismaila Sarr remains away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Palace head into this one without a win in seven and so look ripe for the picking for high-flying Villa.

Midweek Football Tips: Everton v Wolves

For anyone seeking a big-priced goalscorer selection, this match could provide opportunities. Wolves finally broke their win duck at the weekend, demolishing West Ham 3-0. Add in their draw at Old Trafford and four points from a possible six in the past week mean spirits must be on the up at Molineux. OK, survival is still a massive task but they will surely head to the Hill Dickinson Stadium confident of getting a result.

Boss Rob Edwards will surely have highlighted Everton’s defensive horror show against Brentford on Sunday – the 4-2 defeat was arguably their worst performance since David Moyes’ return 12 months ago. Any sort of repeat and Wolves – 4.5 to win the game – will be in business here. I certainly fancy them to score and, if they do, Mateus Mane holds decent claims of finding the net. The 18-year-old has been a revelation over the past three games, hitting seven shots and scoring against the Hammers. He’s 5.2 to repeat the trick here which looks a tasty price.

It’s also worth considering a smaller bet on Yerson Mosquera to score. The central defender is proving an aerial threat from set-plays and really should have opened his Wolves account against Manchester United. He had an effort on target on Saturday and Everton did concede, rather miserably, from a corner against Brentford. The Colombian is at 16.0 to score and that’s worth a minimum-stakes punt.

Midweek Football Tips: Bournemouth v Spurs

I’m thinking cards here. Tottenham lead the Premier League for cards received this season (50 in 20 games) and Bournemouth – bottom of the fair-play table last term – are only one shy of that total. It’s also a big game for both sides with the hosts now without a win in 11, while Spurs have won just two of their last 11. Things need to change in both camps. A competitive battle can therefore be expected.

The referee is Darren England. The appointment could be better but he’s virtually bang on the league average for cards, showing 3.58 per game. Given the teams involved, that figure looks set to rise here and I’m happy to back over 4.5 cards at odds-against. For the record, there were six in the reverse fixture in August.
