January Transfer Window Round-Up
The winter transfer window closed earlier this week and it means Premier League clubs will have no further opportunities to strengthen their squads this season, barring any potential free agency deals.
There was plenty of activity in a complex market, but there were some teams that opted to keep their power dry.
We take a look at the most significant moves of the transfer window.
January Transfer: Nico Gonzalez [Porto – Manchester City] £50m
Manchester City spent big in the transfer window, bringing in Abdukodir Khusanov,
Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush in high-profile moves, but the arrival of Nico Gonzalez from Porto may prove the most significant.
City’s troubles have been there for all to see this season and they have stemmed from a lack of quality, energy and control in midfield.
Gonzalez is not yet an elite-level performer and certainly not at the level of the injured Rodri, but the former Porto man will bring vitality to the Citizens midfield and the 23-year-old is certainly an upgrade on Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic.
January Transfer: Marcus Rashford [Man United – Aston Villa] Loan
Marcus Rashford’s time at Manchester United took a sour turn, but Aston Villa appear to have picked up a top-level performer.
The criticism of the England forward seems pretty harsh, given the level of United’s play for much of this season, and a move to Villa could get the 27-year-old back on track.
Rashford has previously enjoyed campaigns where he has scored 30, 22 and 21 goals, so Premier League defences should be on red alert.
January Transfer: Mathys Tel [Bayern Munich – Tottenham] Loan
Tottenham’s injury-ravaged squad was in desperate need of reinforcements and they look to have made a good addition in Tel.
The 19-year-old is Bayern’s youngest ever goalscorer and he is capable of operating anywhere across the front line.
The Frenchman should help Spurs climb up the Premier League table.
January Transfer: Julio Enciso [Brighton – Ipswich] Loan & Jaden Philogene [Aston Villa – Ipswich] £20m
The signings of Julio Enciso and Jaden Philogene are a big upgrade to Ipswich’s attack, which already contains the capable Liam Delap.
The Tractor Boys are bidding to avoid an instant return to the Championship, and while the Suffolk side may still slip back to the second tier, Kieran McKenna certainly has more options at his disposal.
January Transfer: Patrick Dorgu [Lecce – Manchester United] £25m
Patrick Dorgu is unlikely to provide the solution to Manchester United’s raft of problems, but the 20-year-old is comfortable operating as a left wing-back and the former Lecce man should at least bring a better balance to the Red Devils.
It seems clear that United have and will back Ruben Amorim’s shape and way of playing when conducting transfer business and it will be interesting to see if the former Sporting boss can start delivering results.
