The penultimate round of group phase games takes place amongst Europe’s elite across Tuesday and Wednesday – Andy Schooler has his latest round of Champions League Best Bets exclusively for kwiff.

The layers clearly feel the holders will have too much for the Portuguese champions in this one. However, the fact is that PSG have won just five of their last 10 (excluding penalty shoot-outs) and the heading to the Estadio Jose Alvalade is a tough assignment these days.
Champions League Best Bets: Sporting v PSG
Sporting have won all three home games in the Champions League so far – against Club Brugge, Marseille and Kairat Almaty – while in all competitions they’ve won their last seven without conceding a single goal. Clearly this will be a tougher test but PSG’s form suggests this is a decent time to facing them and, frankly, a draw would not be a bad result for the visitors as they look to nail down a top-eight finish.
Sporting, who led Bayern Munich in Germany before succumbing to three late goals, are two points off the top eight and finish at Athletic Bilbao next week so they will certainly be aiming to make full use of home advantage here. Backing the hosts in the double-chance market at close to even money has potential.
Champions League Best Bets: Chelsea v Pafos
I’m going for another long shot for this round’s goalscorer pick. I did fancy David Luiz against his former club but the veteran defender, who has three goals in his last 14 starts for the Cypriot side, is a major doubt to play at Stamford Bridge after limping off at the weekend.
However, that should mean fellow centre-back Derrick Luckassen is now the main set-piece target. The brother of Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey, Luckassen also has three goals already this season and Pafos have shown in this competition that they have real threat from set-plays. Defending them hasn’t been a strong point for Chelsea, who are in the Premier League’s top six when it comes to the list of most goals conceded from set-pieces. Overall, they have been far from watertight.
There’s also the strong possibility of new boss Liam Rosenior rotating his players and sending out a rather unusual-looking defence which might not be well drilled as a unit. Pafos are still in with a decent chance of a play-off spot so will be determined to get something here, even if Chelsea are worthy favourites. They finish at home to Slavia Prague so if they can grab a point in this game, they will be confident of making that top 24, which they currently sit just outside.
Champions League Best Bets: Spurs v Dortmund
The ever-restless Tottenham fans may not take long to get on their own side’s back here and if the players want to avoid that scenario, the least they can do is show them that they truly care with a battling display. Much is at stake – both sides sit one point outside the top eight going into matchday seven – and so it’s not hard to see a few tackles flying in. A look at the card markets shows Archie Gray is up at 3.75 for a card and, given he’s picked up five in his last nine starts, that looks tempting.
Gray has been a regular in recent weeks, playing in his favoured midfield role, but in a side lacking confidence, he’s struggled at times. That could be the case here, too, against a decent Dortmund outfit. The referee, Swede Glen Nyberg, could be better and there is a worry that Gray could be benched if the under-pressure Thomas Frank switches things up. However, it’s a price worth taking if Gray is in the starting XI.
