Premier League Best Bets: Andy Schooler’s Big Boxing Day 2024 Preview
Boxing Day 2024 Bets: Wolves v Man Utd
If there really anyone out there who thinks United are a good bet at odds-on here? It’s now 11 years post-Fergie and arguably things have never looked so bleak – and I’m not talking about the leaking roof. Bournemouth humbled the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Saturday, on the same day Wolves were getting the desired reaction out of their players having sacked Gary O’Neil.
Vitor Pereira’s new side eased to a 3-0 victory at Leicester, the most important element being the clean sheet – only their second in 29 league games. Wolves have been able to score goals all season – only six teams have scored more than their 27 – so if Pereira is able to tighten things up at the back and still allow their creative juices to flow, Saturday’s result may well be more than a dead-cat bounce. The rejuvenated Molineux crowd will certainly be up for this one and Wolves look worth backing at 3.5, with 1.72 in the double-chance market another option.
Boxing Day 2024 Bets: Arsenal v Ipswich
Following the form in the goalscorer markets has proved to be good business for this column so far this season. And so we must consider Cody Gakpo to score in this game. The Liverpool forward has seven goals in his last 11 club appearances. He also netted for the Netherlands during that spell. You never know what you’ll get with this Spurs team. They took full advantage of Manchester City’s recent deficiencies, winning 4-0 at the Etihad, but last time out on home soil they shipped four to Chelsea.
Liverpool are the best team in the league at present, no question, and while the hosts could well be up for the challenge, there has to be a decent chance they crumble again, especially given they will remain without both first-choice centre-backs – Cristian Romero and Mickey van der Ven – for this contest. If Liverpool do get among the goals, expect the in-form Gakpo to be to the fore.
Boxing Day 2024 Bets: Man Utd v Bournemouth
Youri Tielemans ran the show for Aston Villa against Manchester City on Saturday and was very much involved in their goals without scoring or assisting. However, it’s worth taking note of the numbers surrounding the Belgian midfielder. This season he’s made 38 key passes – basically assisted shots – and only Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka have more. With Jhon Duran up ahead in red-hot form – he’s scored in every Premier League start he’s had – there looks every chance of Tielemans adding to his tally of four assists in the near future.
Perhaps this isn’t the best game for that to happen. After all, Newcastle have just posted back-to-back 4-0 wins, but this is a big step up from relegation battlers Leicester and Ipswich. The Newcastle backline has missed Sven Botman this season, while Emil Krafth and Jamaal Lascelles are also out, not to mention keeper Nick Pope. Villa have the nous to unpick the home defence and, if they do, expect Tielemans to play a big part.
