Greatest Ever Premier League Scorers: Top 5 Leading Hot Shots

The 33rd Premier League season will get underway this weekend and this marks the perfect opportunity to look back at the 5 greatest ever Premier League Scorers in the competition’s history.

Premier League Scorers: Alan Shearer (260)

The original goalscorer of the Premier League, Shearer’s record of 260 strikes is one that will take some beating and no one has got close since he hung up his boots in 2006.

Shearer’s tally includes 112 for Blackburn, who he helped to league championship glory in 1995, and 148 for boyhood club Newcastle, where he is also the all-time leading scorer, netting 206 times across all competitions for the Magpies.

A three-time winner of the Golden Boot in 1995, 1996 and 1997, Shearer averaged 0.59 goals per game in the division, while this tally doesn’t take into account the 23 top-flight goals he struck for Southampton before the Premier League was formed.

Premier League Scorers: Harry Kane (213)

For so long it looked like Shearer’s record would be overhauled by Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer Harry Kane, who made it to 213 Premier League strikes before his 30th birthday, but then decided to leave for Bayern Munich in 2023.

Kane has continued scoring at a phenomenal rate in Germany, while he is also England’s record goalscorer with 66 strikes in 98 internationals.  He will be on the verge of turning 34 by the time his contract expires with Bayern, but if he does return to the Premier League at that point, he may still have time to chase down and overhaul Shearer’s record.

Premier League Scorers: Wayne Rooney (208)

Manchester United’s all-time record scorer Wayne Rooney was another who appeared destined to break Shearer’s record, with the former England captain striking 183 times in the Premier League for Red Devils. Rooney also scored 25 times across two spells with Everton, but perhaps surprisingly he never won the Premier League Golden Boot, with his best scoring season coming in 2011/12 when he found the back of the net 27 times.

Since retiring from playing, Rooney has turned his hand to management with varying degrees of success. He is currently in charge of Championship Plymouth Argyle.

Premier League Scorers: Andrew Cole (187)

The second former Manchester United star on this list, Andrew Cole won nine major honours during a six-year spell at Old Trafford, including playing an integral role in their historic 1998/99 treble success. Cole scored 17 Premier League goals that season and 93 in total for United, while his other top-flight strikes came for the likes of Newcastle, where he won the Golden Boot in 1994, Blackburn, Fulham, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

The now 52-year-old also holds the distinction of being the first player to score five goals in a single Premier League match, doing so for United in their 9-0 rout of Ipswich in 1995.

Premier League Scorers: Sergio Aguero (184)

Sergio Aguero is Manchester City’s all-time record scorer and lifted 15 major honours during a decade-long stay with the club, but he is most synonymous for scoring the dramatic late winner against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of 2011/12 season to hand City their first Premier league title.

Despite scoring 20+ league goals in six separate seasons, Aguero only once claimed the Premier League’s Golden Boot, doing so with a tally of 26 during the 2014/15 campaign. After leaving the Citizens in 2021 Aguero joined Barcelona, but he was forced to retire just a few months later, bringing to an end a decorated playing career that is most closely associated with City.
