Liverpool v Everton: 5 Famous Merseyside Derbies

The first-ever meeting between the local rivals took place in October 1893, when Everton won 3-0, and it is the longest-running top-flight derby in England.

There have been many unforgettable clashes between the Blues and the Reds down the years, including in cup semi-finals and finals, with Liverpool winning 99 of the 244 meetings in all competitions, while Everton have won on 68 occasions and there have been 77 draws. Here we look back on five of the most memorable derbies between the two famous clubs.

Famous Merseyside Derbies: Liverpool 0-2 Everton – February 2021

Everton’s 2-0 win at Anfield in February 2021 was a long-awaited success for the Blue half of the city as it was their first victory at Anfield since 1999 and their first derby win of any description since 2010.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson were the goalscorers for the Toffees on a day to forget for Liverpool, the defeat meaning the Reds had lost four consecutive home matches for the first time since 1923.

Famous Merseyside Derbies: Everton 0-5 Liverpool – November 1982

Liverpool’s record away win at Everton came in 1982 and is still fondly remembered by Reds fans. Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer Ian Rush scored four times to silence the home faithful with Mark Lawrenson also on target in the Goodison Park rout.

Bob Paisley’s side, who would go on to win the title, were helped by Glenn Keeley’s sending off towards the end of the first half as the Reds overwhelmed the Blues with four of their goals coming after the break.

Famous Merseyside Derbies: Liverpool 0-1 Everton – October 1984

Everton had not won at Anfield for 14 years when they arrived in autumn 1984 hoping to end that dismal run and showcase their title credentials in the process.  They got the victory their performance deserved thanks to Graeme Sharp’s sublime half-volley from distance early in the second half – a strike that was later voted goal of the season.

The much-celebrated success inspired the Toffees to go on and win the First Division, finishing 13 points ahead of second-placed Liverpool.

Famous Merseyside Derbies: Liverpool 3-1 Everton – FA Cup final – May 1986

The first-ever all-Merseyside FA Cup Final was won by Liverpool in 1986 at Wembley as Kenny Dalglish’s side completed the League and FA Cup Double for the first time.

Everton went in front through Gary Lineker after 27 minutes but the Reds hit back in the second half with two goals from Rush and one from Craig Johnston.

Famous Merseyside Derbies: Liverpool 3-2 Everton – FA Cup Final – May 1989

Three years later, the two rivals met at Wembley again to contest the Cup final and again Liverpool came out on top. It was an emotional victory, coming just five weeks after the Hillsborough Disaster, as the Reds won 3-2 after extra-time.

John Aldridge’s early goal looked to have been enough for Dalglish’s team but Stuart McCall equalised in the 90th minute to force an extra half an hour. In a pulsating extra-time, Rush quickly made it 2-1 but McCall fired in another equaliser before Rush, who else, headed home the winner from an inch-perfect John Barnes cross.
