Premier League Predictions for the weekend: Form guide points to home win
With the international break looming, under-fire United chief Erik ten Hag may have one match to save his job – and the prospects aren’t good.
The pressure on the Dutchman is intensifying with his side winless in four, shambolic in a 3-0 home loss to Tottenham last Sunday and only spared a Europa League loss in Porto on Thursday by Harry Maguire’s injury-time equaliser.
And now they have to go to Aston Villa just a few days after Unai Emery’s saw off Bayern Munich in the Champions League. This is the last fixture the United boss would have wanted right now.
That 3-3 draw in Porto did little to ease the pressure on United, who have had 24 hours less than Villa to get ready for this match.
And Villa can do very little wrong. Last week’s 2-2 draw at Ipswich wasn’t their finest performance and cost them a chance to move back into the top four.
But to bounce back and beat Bayern 1-0 in Europe was truly heroic and they’ll be feeling invincible, quite the contrast to the mood at Old Trafford.
Premier League Predictions for the weekend: Youri can clock up decent pass tally
Youri Tielemans has been one of Villa’s best players this season and may well be their most important against United.
United’s midfield looks suspect this season with Scott McTominay departed, Kobbie Mainoo injured and Casemiro and Christian Eriksen shadows of their former selves, and Villa can boss that area.
And if Tielemans runs the show then he can clock up at least 56 passes. On his last Premier League home appearance, the Belgium midfielder made 71 passes in the 3-1 win against Wolves.
Premier League Predictions for the weekend: United can corner set-piece profit
United’s matches this season are rarely dull with an attack full of pace, especially on the break, and you always expect them to win – and concede – corners.
Their team corners count at Villa Park is set at 4.5 and they can soar through that.
At Porto on Thursday in the Europa League, United won ten corners in a wide-open match which produced 15.
Even last week in the 3-0 home loss to Tottenham, a game in which they were truly dreadful, they didn’t win their first corner until early in the second half. Yet they went on to win five.
They have wide players who will get to the byline and they will test Emi Martinez in the Villa goal so expect them to get at least five corners.
