Dave Massey’s Super Horses to Follow 2024: Latest Yarmouth Eyecatchers

Horses to Follow 2024

Last week, good kwiff readers, I went to Great Yarmouth so you didn’t have to in the search of more Horses to Follow 2024 for you lovely people.

Horses to Follow 2024: Yamouth Eyecatchers

Whilst there, I took in three days of what they call the exotic-sounding Eastern Festival at the track, and saw some horses that I think will be useful for us to follow in the future. We’ll start off with one that’s going to be trained by someone different next year, we pretty much know that for sure, but whoever it is, they’ll have a nice horse on their hands

Horses to Follow 2024: White Star Crown (Sir Michael Stoute)

When White Crown Star first strode into the paddock I simply wrote down “unfit” next to him, as he looked very much in need of the run after ten weeks off the track, but after a couple of laps around it became apparent he wasn’t quite as unfit as he initially looked; he’s simply one big unit and it’s just the way he is. All the same, I thought he’d come on for this, so it was very pleasing to see him finish a close third to the market leaders, who finished 1-2 here, particularly as he didn’t fully settle early on.

A really strong, well-built and deep-girthed type, he made a very good impression here and can surely only progress with time and distance. He has the look of a stayer about him, and that’s backed up by his pedigree, with the dam being a half-sister to Eleanora Duse, a Group winner at 10f and was placed behind Midday in a Yorkshire Oaks.

You’d imagine one more run this season to give him a bit more experience will probably be the way forward, as he’s one that definitely doesn’t need to be rushed; his best days are very much ahead of him and he’s one I’m looking forward to watching progress over the next year.

Horses to Follow 2024: Soho Square (James Fanshawe)

This edition of the tracker really should be renamed “Read This Column Again Next April” as both White Star Crown and Soho Square are horses very much for the long term, but I have to give James Fanshawe’s filly a mention as she really did catch the eye before her race on Wednesday, for all she went off 125-1 and ran greener than a dozen lettuces.

A lovely, rangy sort with plenty of room to progress physically, she wasn’t match fit here by any means but still made plenty of appeal as she strode around the paddock and she continually caught the eye as attractive. She didn’t have a clue what was happening once the stalls opened, outpaced from the get-go and jumping the path that comes after about 100yds after the start, and it was all happening a bit quickly for her.

She’s only beaten a couple home but she was just starting to get the message in the final stages, and I suggest she’ll come on an awful lot for this experience.  The filly is from a family that screams stamina at you, the dam a half-sister to the useful Lat Hawill, who himself was related to some smart staying types, so it’ll all be about next year for Soho Square. Stick her in your trackers and forget about her for the time being, but set Alexa for a reminder next spring…

Horses to Follow 2024: Redorange (Clive Cox)

Okay, now let’s give you one that’s surely going to be winning again before much longer and that’s Redorange, who could easily be fancied on what he’d achieved to date before his nursery debut last week, with an official mark of 79 looking fairly generous on his previous Salisbury effort where he finished second – third home Shout had won with any amount in hand off 83 at Doncaster the previous week.

Solidly built, he looked very fit here and one of two that made plenty of appeal on looks, but it was the way he disposed of his rivals with his front-running display that marked him out as improving and one to follow. He might not be a star but there’s surely more to come now he knows what’s required, and although he’s going to get another 8lb or so for this, I’d still say that would be a more than workable mark next time. Can win another good nursery when conditions are in his favour (as yet, untried on anything worse than good).
