Champions League Tips – Thursday

The new-look Champions League is up and running and spectators have already been royally entertained.

Bayern Munich destroyed Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 on Tuesday, the same night Liverpool came from behind to win an end-to-end clash with AC Milan 3-1 at the San Siro.

And with 36 teams involved for the first time this season, there is an extra day of matches during the first gameweek.

Here are our three best bets for the final batch of matchday one fixtures on Thursday.

Champions League Tips: Biereth can net in close contest

On their first appearance in a European competition in their 121-year history, French side Brest have been handed a relatively soft start as they welcome Sturm Graz to the Stade du Roudourou on Thursday.

This will also be Sturm Graz’s first appearance in the Champions League proper since the 2000-01 season, so both sides are unknown quantities at this level.

It is hard to pinpoint a winner and the goalscorer markets instead make greater appeal with youngster Mika Biereth worth backing to find the net at 3.75.

The 21-year-old impressed on loan at Sturm Graz last term, scoring nine times in 22 matches in all competitions as the Austrian club won a domestic league and cup double.

Biereth has already scored four times in six matches this season and can breach a Brest defence which will be missing key men Bradley Locko and Achraf Dari.

Champions League Tips: Barca’s can carry electrifying league form

Barcelona have made a scintillating start to life under Hansi Flick and they can carry that form into their Champions League opener against Monaco.

Barca put seven goals past Real Valladolid and thrashed Girona 4-1 either side of the international break and have impressed despite a lengthy injury list, sitting top of La Liga with five wins from as many matches.

Monaco have not really put a foot wrong this season, although they dropped points in their last home contest with Lens and it would be a bold move to bet against a Barcelona side who are the form team in Europe right now.

Champions League Tips: Atletico able to edge high-scoring clash

Atletico Madrid and Leipzig have both made strong starts to their domestic campaigns and their clash at the Metropolitano Stadium could be a blockbuster.

Atleti have emerged as Barcelona’s closest early challengers at the La Liga summit with 11 points from five matches, while Leipzig have taken seven points from three games in the Bundesliga, becoming the first team to beat Bayer Leverkusen domestically in nearly 18 months.

Atletico Madrid were the only team to maintain a 100 per cent record at home in last season’s Champions League, winning all five games on their own patch against Feyenoord, Celtic, Lazio, Inter and Borussia Dortmund.

Their supreme strength on home soil could see them edge the contest, but with attacking stars such as Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Xavi Simons, Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda involved, goals look guaranteed.

Therefore, an Atletico win and both teams to score looks the way to go.
