The eyes of the golfing world will be on Northern Ireland this week, as a strong field lines up for the Irish Open 2024 at Royal County Down. The likes of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Seamus Power will enjoy plenty of support, as they look to add their names to the roll of honour for this event.

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre will also return to the DP World Tour to take part this week, along with three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington. The County Down course, recently voted the world’s top course by a golf magazine, is a par-71 and measures in at over 7186 yards. We have three selections to consider for this week’s tournament, which gets underway on Thursday 12th September.
Irish Open 2024 – Lowry Poised
Shane Lowry is one of a small number of former winners in the field this week, with the Irishman lifting the trophy as an amateur back in 2009. That was on a links course at County Louth and the Ryder Cup star (9.85 Outright Market) will be pleased to see the tournament return to the coast in 2024.
Lowry’s low ball flight is ideal for the windy conditions and he will have plenty of support in County Down, with his sole Major success coming at The Open in Northern Ireland. A sixth place at this year’s Open could have been even better but for a third round 77, while he finished the PGA Tour season in good form.
A T13 finish at the BMW Championship was followed by T9 at the season-ending Tour Championship, where he carded rounds of 69-69-65-68. It’s also worth noting that Lowry finished in a tie for third last year, two shots behind the eventual winner Vincent Norrman.
Irish Open 2024 – Fantastic Fox
Not many players have a more consistent record in this event than Ryan Fox, with the New Zealander coming close to winning this tournament on more than one occasion. The 37-year-old (23.50 to take the title this week) was runner-up in both 2018 – when he lost in a play-off – and 2022, while he finished T3 last year.
The year of his play-off loss to Scotland’s Russell Knox the tournament was played on a links course at Ballyliffin, similar to Royal County Down, so he should relish the test this week. Growing up in Auckland, Fox has experienced golf in all conditions and powerful ball-striking saw him claim a T25 finish at The Open this year. Putting well on fast and undulating greens will be crucial this week and Fox currently ranks fifth on the DP World Tour for Average Putts Per Round.
Irish Open 2024 – Fitzpatrick knocking on the door
The younger of the Fitzpatrick brothers, Alex, is closing in on a first DP World Tour title and it’s surely just a matter of time before he lands one. The 25-year-old has four top-10 finishes to his name and seven other top-20 finishes, including T17 place at The Open in July. Fitzpatrick – 5.20 to claim a top-10 finish – heads to Ireland in good form, after securing a T6 finish at last week’s European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre. An opening round 63 got him off to a flying start in Switzerland and a 75 on Saturday scuppered his chances of taking the title.
