Ireland v England Nations League Top Tips: Will England Reign Supreme?

Autumn Internationals

Republic of Ireland v England Nations League

On Saturday England fans get their first chance to see the Three Lions in action since the heartbreaking Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. The England team have travelled across the Irish Sea to face the Republic of Ireland for Ireland v England Nations League.

This is a Nations League fixture, starting at 5pm UK and Ireland time. It is the first time England and the Republic of Ireland have met in a competitive match for 33 years. The reverse fixture will take place at Wembley in November.

The last time England played  Ireland in a friendly was at Wembley in 2020. Goals from Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin meant a 3-0 victory for the home side.

This will be Lee Carsley’s first match in charge of England. Carsley has been made interim manager in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s departure after Euro 2024. Carsley’s reign got off to a disappointing start when Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden withdrew from his squad due to injury and illness. Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw are also missing.

Ireland v England Nations League: Carsley off to a winning start?

Clear and pleasant conditions are forecast for Dublin on Saturday evening, so England have an ideal chance to showcase their dominance in the sport. Even with some high-profile absentees, the visitors should have more than enough firepower to secure a comfortable victory.

Ireland chief Heimir Hallgrimsson, like Carsley, is managing his team for the first time. Hallgrimsson’s task appears much tougher, though, with options limited. Ireland do not have many offensive weapons to call upon and star-forward Evan Ferguson is working his way back to fitness after months of injury hell.

England to win without conceding a goal looks a solid investment at a shade bigger than evens. Ferguson is just the sort of player that Harry Maguire will feel comfortable nullifying.

Ireland v England Nations League: Eze might star for the visitors

Cole Palmer should play a leading role for Lee Carsley in the months to come – the pair worked well together for England Under-21s, howeverEberechi Eze can shine in Palmer’s absence.

Eze was on the same pitch as Palmer last Sunday, starring for Crystal Palace against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, scoring a fantastic equaliser for the Eagles.

Eze appears to be growing in confidence all the time and could be a huge threat for England in Ireland. The 26-year-old can get on the scoresheet if selected.
