There are five meetings in Britain and Ireland on Wednesday and there are plenty of opportunities for punters, here are our Wednesday Racing Tips for Gowran Park’s evening card, including one in the feature Hurry Harriet Stakes.
Wednesday Racing Tips: Kings Time (6.15)
While KINGS TIME (6.15) was undoubtedly disappointing in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot when last seen, he deserves another chance in the 7f handicap at Gowran Park. He hung badly right in the straight and was essentially pulled up once his chance was gone, being spared a hard race.
Kings Time wouldn’t be the first horse to bounce back following a poor run at the royal meeting and the Britannia form is, unsurprisingly given its competitiveness, working out well. The four-year-old is surely better judged on his smooth success in a good time over 7f at Cork on his comeback in May, a performance which proves he can go well fresh on his return to the track following 55 days off.
Take out the Buckingham Palace run and the lightly-raced son of Exceed And Excel would probably be favourite for this much weaker contest, so deserves consideration for the in-form Jessica Harrington.
Wednesday Racing Tips: Azada (6.50)
Next up at Gowran is the Listed Hurry Harriet Stakes and Azada arrives with the strongest claims for Dermot Weld. The fact Weld was willing to run her in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on her return in May following a sole maiden victory on her debut in the autumn was eye-catching, and she emerged with plenty of credit when sixth behind Fallen Angel. She was keen and a bit green in a slowly run race and served notice of the fact she’d be winning soon down in class.
Azada was expected to do the business on her next outing at the Curragh in the Listed Celebration Stakes in June, but again could have done with a stronger gallop from her wide draw when a keeping-on third. Stepping up an extra furlong and a half in trip looks the right move for Azada, who has plenty of middle-distance performers in her pedigree and it is still early days for her.
Wednesday Racing Tips: Smooth Tom (7.20)
A trappy five-runner McEnery Cup Handicap over an extended 1m4f can go the way of Smooth Tom for Andrew Slattery. The useful dual-purpose operator hasn’t been seen since the Punchestown festival in April, but possesses plenty of smart form following breaks, including when an excellent second to Chazzesmee after an 82-day absence in the Irish Lincolnshire at the start of this Flat season.
The mile trip of the Irish Lincolnshire is as sharp as Smooth Tom wants (his top performance in this sphere on Racing Post Ratings came over this course and distance) and it is likely he has been aimed at this decent pot. Versatile regarding ground conditions, Smooth Tom can be seen to better effect over this trip.
