The World Cup of Darts 2024 returns for the 2024 edition in Frankfurt, Germany with England hot favourites to win their first title since 2016. Defending champions Wales were dealt a blow when Gerwyn Price pulled out to be replaced by Jim Williams.
The Netherlands and last year’s runners-up Scotland are the other two seeds alongside England and Wales. They progress automatically to the knockout stages while the other 36 teams must battle it out in 12 groups of three, with the winner of each section progressing. England are the favourites with current and former World Champions joining forces; Luke Humphries and Michael Smith. Football might not be coming home this summer – but darts just might!
World Cup of Darts 2024: Germans Respect on Home Soil
Germany have never won the World Cup of Darts but they could have a solid chance this year with Martin Schindler and Gabriel Clemens representing their nation. The pair were quarter-finalists two years ago in their first attempt as a duo before being knocked out in the semi-finals 12 months ago.
Schindler recently won his first European Tour title, the 2024 International Darts Open while Clemens reached the last four of the Players Championship not too long ago. With a raucous home crowd behind them, the pair who are both ranked in the top 24 in the world could provide something of a shock.
England are understandably favourites but have only reached the final in one of the last seven years and while this year’s pair of Michael Smith and Luke Humphries are undoubtedly the most talented in the tournament, they have never played together and are likely to get a hostile reception.
Defending champions Wales can be left well alone following Gerwyn Price’s departure while Danny Noppert has fallen down the PDC Order of Merit and looks a weak link for the Dutch.
World Cup of Darts 2024: Luck of The Irish
Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan is one of just four players to compete in every edition of the World Cup of Darts and the veteran has landed an impressive playing partner this year as Josh Rock makes his debut. The former PDC World Youth Champion had a meteoric rise through the sport but after a difficult few years, looks to be back on an upward curve.
He recently won the 2024 Dutch Darts Championship and is now just outside of the world’s top 16. Rock may be the difference and Northern Ireland could outrun their odds.
World Cup of Darts 2024: Uncle Sam Dangerous
Group L is one of the most competitive at the World Cup of Darts but the United States are fancied to top it. The duo of Jules van Dongen and Danny Lauby are a solid pair, whereas very little is known about Portugal’s David Gomes, who will partner Jose de Sousa.
Italy have 12 losses from 13 games at this competition so are also avoided.
