Ross Burdon Racing: Long, Hot Summer, June 22nd 2026

Ross Burdon Racing

The weather in early June has been hot and so has the form of Ross Burdon Racing! From just five runners this month we have won with three of them as well as Northcliff running a good race on stable debut to finish fourth at Newmarket on Friday evening.

Ross Burdon Racing: Long, Hot Summer, June 22nd 2026

We started the week at Windsor, which has become a very happy hunting ground for us this season, and Seventy continued his superb year, by backing up his recent course form and winning easily under Jack Mitchell. Since the turn of the year Seventy has just kept on improving, this being his third win for us as well as three placings.

Ross Burdon Racing: Super Seventy

Jack settled him towards the rear of the field and nursed him into the race, we were very keen not to hit the front too soon as we feel he idled in front when second over course and distance previously, before producing him on the outside with just over a furlong to run. From there it was all only hands and heels, with Jack never having to use his ProCush for encouragement, as Seventy won pretty tidily by a length and a half.

Having been bought by myself, in partnership with our great supporters the Unlucky Rovers, for only 12000guineas, he has more than paid for himself since October and holds an entry in the upcoming July sale back at Tattersalls, though we are undecided if he will take up that engagement. Before then, Seventy may make a quick reappearance at Newmarket this weekend, depending on what the handicapper does on Tuesday morning.

As mentioned, Northcliff made his debut for us on Friday evening, running well to finish fourth, eventually beaten almost five lengths, but only being beaten 3/4 length by the second placed horse. Ancient State, sporting first time eye-shields bolted up, recording a career best by some way, but, we were happy with our run, and, having only his first start for us felt we learnt plenty and Northcliff should be a horse we will have some fun with this summer.

Ross Burdon Racing: Week Ahead

The week ahead is potentially very busy. We start with two runners at out current favourite track, Windsor. Just King High, who ran much better last time at Southwell, reverts back to turf and contests the six furlong apprentice race, with our yard apprentice Phoebe Edwards taking the mount. Phoebe rides ‘The King’ in all of his work and we’re hopeful he can translate his form on the gallops under Phoebe to the track, although the ground may be on the quick side for him.

Mesaafi also runs Monday, having won over course and distance three weeks ago. This race looks much deeper, but we are only two pound higher in the weights than for that win and still six pound below the mark we were a close third from at Ascot eleven months ago. If he performs to that level he should be hard to beat, although five furlong sprints can be very unpredictable.

Ross Burdon Racing: Future Entries

We have two entries on Wednesday but, we may end up without a runner at all. Dust Cover is going to wait until next week with rain on the horizon and Directors Cut, who is due to make his debut for us, needs a few withdrawals to be guaranteed a run. Directors Cut has pleased us since arriving last month from John and Thady Gosden, though I get the impression he will be much better suited to being a racehorse once he has been gelded. His mind isn’t fully on the job at the minute and despite having plenty of natural ability, he may need a small operation before we see the best of him.

The end of the week could also be busy, on Thursday we may have our first two year old runner, with Nightspell due to run at Nottingham. She is a Kameko filly who has pleased us in her work but Thursday will be a huge learning curve for her and us. Joining Nightspell at Nottingham may be Beauty Generation who has an entry in the one mile apprentice handicap. Again, he is a horse Phoebe gets on exceptionally well with at home and we are keen to see if the due can be as effective at the races.
