The last ten days or so have been very good for the team of Ross Burdon Racing, starting off with a winner and a very close second last Monday. Dust Cover returned to Kempton’s all-weather track after not enjoying his trip to Musselburgh and continued his early year improvement back on a surface we know suits him well.
Ross Burdon Racing: Huge May 15th Update
We were further back in the field than ideal, considering the slow pace, but Dusty still managed to finish extremely strongly to push the winner all the way to the line. We were delighted with the run as we were certain Dust Cover still had more to come, the challenge now is to translate that form to turf.
Just over an hour later, Seventy returned to the winners enclosure at Windsor after being given a fine ride by Jack Mitchell, who, after looking like he had nowhere to go, managed to find a small gap in-between the eventual second and third which both horse and jockey bravely went through.
It was very pleasing to get a turf win on to Seventy’s CV as it will likely make him an attractive prospect for when he eventually goes to the sales, however we hope to squeeze some more improvement out of him in the meantime and he will be kept running until the July sales.
Ross Burdon Racing: Hellcat
Hellcat, an online purchase from Thoroughbid in January for only £1800, ran a great race on only her second start for the yard at Wolverhampton last Friday evening. In what looked a hot race for the grade she was widely disregarded by the bookmakers and started at odds of 33/1 but defied those huge odds by finishing third despite getting squeezed out as they jumped away from the stalls and missing the break by around three lengths. It was a hugely encouraging run and we can surely find her an easier opportunity to get her head in front in the near future.
Ross Burdon Racing: Mesaafi
The weather scuppered our plans to run Mesaafi this week, after so long without rain around 7mm fell on Yarmouth to turn ground described as good to firm the night before racing to genuine soft ground in the space of a couple of hours. We found out last year that Mesaafi just doesn’t cope with ground that soft and so he was withdrawn and saved for another day. He may go to Windsor next month but his plans will be determined by the ground.
Ross Burdon Racing: Dust Cover
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Dust Cover will make a quick return to the track today (Friday 15th), if Newbury gets enough rain to ease their ground conditions. He is due to go up three pounds from Saturday so it makes sense to try and take advantage of his old, reduced mark before that kicks in, although we wont risk him on ground with any firm in the description.
Away from the racetrack the team was also busy sourcing and purchasing some new acquisitions. In the Tattersall’s online sale. We were delighted to be able to secure Director’s Cut from John & Thady Gosden’s yard. A lightly race son of Palace Pier who we hope can take us to some nice meetings throughout the summer. Currently rated 77, we hope this is a mark we will be able to improve.
Ross Burdon Racing: Captive Beauty
We also purchased Captive Beauty, a Showcasing filly from Ireland in partnership with Sean Freney. She came highly recommended from Sean and the fact he is very keen to stay involved with her is a huge positive for us. Captive Beauty has only ran twice and looks to be very much a work-in-progress type, much like our other Showcasing, Dust Cover, I would be hopeful she will improve with racing.
