Trainer Ross Burdon continues to fire out winners from his new Newmarket stables, and is back with his latest kwiff update entering a busy spring period. Read his weekly updates every week exclusively for kwiff.
Ross Burdon Racing: February 2026 Update
Last week was another positive one for the yard, with Dust Cover notching our third win of the year, as well as adding to the team of horses for the upcoming year at the recent Tattersalls February sale. Dust Cover continued his progress at Kempton last Wednesday, winning despite being draw widest of all the runners in stall 13.
Ross Burdon Racing: Dynamic Dusty
Paddy Bradley was very cool on Dust to have the confidence in the horse to drop out towards the rear of the field, as to not be caught too wide from his draw, and Dust Cover travelled through the race very sweetly despite the relatively strong pace before Paddy started to make his move after entering the straight.
At one point it looked as though Dust Cover and Something, the eventual runner up, may get into a barging match around two furlongs out but Paddy held his line very well forcing Something to switch inside and allowing Dust Cover a clear passage to the line. After the race Paddy was, again, very complimentary of the horse, insisting there is much more to come and adamant that he is still very much a baby who is learning on the job despite his recent form suggesting he’s the finished article.
From seeing the horse in his day to day training I would agree with the jockey, Dust is very much still raw and immature, as well as the all weather surfaces not being ideal for a horse with his rounded action. He could be a very exciting horse for us and we will mind him and treat him like a good horse, he wont run again on the all-weather and will have a short break now before a grass campaign.
Ross Burdon Racing: Ernie Wolves Bound
On Monday last week Ernie’s Valentine headed back to Wolverhampton, where he had been successful in November, in what looked to be an uber competitive race. Recent winners Latin, Mr Nugget and First Greyed all lined up up against us, as well as some other dangerous all-weather stalwarts. Ernie found himself further back than ideal in the early stages, our plan was to track the favourite, Latin, but the early skirmish meant Phoebe Edwards had to take her medicine a little and settle slightly further back than what we wanted to.
Turning in Ernie still had plenty to do but he picked up very well, as he usually does, and was closing nicely until being checked by both Latin and Mao Shang Wong, stopping his momentum. It was another solid run by our grey warrior, he has been in superb form this winter and will next head to Southwell on 20th Feb for their Friday Night Live meeting.
Ross Burdon Racing: Spring Cleaning
The next few weeks are likely to be pretty slow, the last six weeks of the winter season before the turf restarts always seems that way, with only one runner this week upcoming. Seventy has his third start for us and can hopefully run show something before we revert to headgear with him.
I’m not sure if the return to a mile and a half is the right thing, I thought he ran quite well as Wolverhampton last time over 9.5 furlongs, but I’m not convinced he’s a fast horse either. Paddy Bradley takes the ride for the Unlucky Rovers and, having won twice this year on Dust Cover in the same silks, we would be delighted if he could find us another winner.
Ross Burdon Racing: New Additions
As mentioned earlier, we also added to our string this week at the sales, with the purchase of Gunlock, a six year old gelding who won recently at Kempton, where he beat Waistcoat. I thought that was a very good run, especially considering Waistcoat is now rated six pounds higher than when they met in December. I hope he can be a good addition to the team and look forward to him running for the yard.
