Ross Burdon Racing has new digs; read on to see how the team and the animals have settled into the new stables in his latest kwiff blog.
Ross Burdon Racing: Well Done Waistcoat!
After moving our operation a couple of doors down into our new yard after New Year we were excited to send out our first runner from the new base on Sunday, when Waistcoat ran at Chelmsford, a meeting put on by the BHA after the last minute cancellation of Wolverhampton’s valuable Friday Night Live fixture two days earlier.
Waistcoat was due to run at that lost meeting and, luckily for us, a race with similar conditions was programmed for Chelmsford. Dropping back to six on a sharp track was always going to be a test for us but I had been encouraged by Waistcoat’s recent work, as well as the sectionals from his Kempton second, that he could cope with the drop in trip and so it proved.
Ross Burdon Racing: Kempton Bound
After not breaking overly strongly, Waistcoat travelled very well from off the pace and once the field swung into the straight and Rhys Clutterbuck asked him to go and win his race, the horse duly obliged, picking up very well down the middle of the track to win by a comfortable length and three quarters.
Sunday’s race was won from a career high mark for Waistcoat, with another rise in the weights coming on Tuesday probably taking him to a mark in the mid-seventies, if the handicapper raises him more than the 5lb penalty he would have to shoulder if he runs before his new mark kicks in then the chances are he would try and follow up at Kempton next week before a short break to wait for the grass season.
Ross Burdon Racing: Busy at Sackville Stables
The end of this week and start of next week will be relatively busy for us, starting tomorrow at Wolverhampton. Seventy will make his second start for us in the apprentice handicap there, where hopefully he can show more than he did at Lingfield last month. Phoebe Edwards, our apprentice, will again take the ride on him and we have dropped in trip to a mile and a quarter.
Watching the Lingfield race back, Seventy travelled well before fading in the last half a mile, whether that was fitness or stamina we will find out much more about him after tomorrow. At home Seventy is pretty laid back and in time he may benefit form being gelded or some headgear, or both, but at the minute we will give him the benefit of the doubt and let him try and show some improved form before we make less of a man of him, shall we say!
Ross Burdon Racing: Stay On, Ernie!
On Saturday we travel to Southwell with Ernie’s Valentine, a track he’s never won at, which is a surprise considering all seven of his wins since his debut success have come on synthetic surfaces, although in his defence he has only ran there once.
I actually think the track, and the way its ridden, will suit his style of racing, they tend to drift into the centre of the track and the longer straight should suit him better than the tight bends of Lingfield and Wolverhampton. I’m very keen to make him a winner at every all-weather track in the UK and if he could win at Southwell that would only leave Newcastle to tick off.
Ross Burdon Racing: Hurdles for High Point
Early next week we will give High Point his second start over hurdles, either running at Lingfield or Leicester depending on ground conditions. On his jumping debut at Fakenham, High Point really struggled jumping out of the deep ground and was pulled up after getting very tired, because of this we’re also coming back in trip to two miles to give him a better chance at lasting home.
His jumping was adequate at Fakenham and if hes learnt from that and gained some confidence I would be hopeful we should get a much better showing from High Point which would give us the confidence to maintain his jumping experiment.
As well as High Point and potentially Waistcoat representing the yard next week Saturn Seven and Dust Cover will also most likely run. Saturn Seven never really got into her race last time out at Southwell having missed the break and then over racing to catch up to the pack and burning herself out.
We will be fitting her with a hood and stepping up in trip to seven furlongs, things I think will help her both in the early and later parts of the race. Dust Cover returns to Southwell on Wednesday after winning and finishing second on his two previous visits there, still a baby I hope that there is some more improvement left in him. If the runners from Sackville House can continue in the same vein as Waistcoat started our tenure in the new premises we would all be very happy.
