Dave Massey’s Huge Horse Racing Tips: Sandown and Aintree

Let’s start with what I think should be the best bet on Sandown’s card on Saturday, namely Knickerbockerglory, who can recoup some of the ante-post money I did in on him for the Greatwood Hurdle….

Horse Racing Tips: Knickerbockerglory (Sandown, 2.25)

He wants soft/heavy ground to show his very best, so it was something of a surprise – given the biblical rain we had at Cheltenham on the Friday – to find he’d been made a non-runner on the day with the ground given as the excuse. Maybe they thought it was drying out too quickly, but whatever, with more rain to come at Sandown on Friday and into Saturday, the ground certainly won’t be an issue here.

He took this very contest in heavy ground on his reappearance last year and given how well he continued to run in some classy handicaps after that, to start this season off only 6lb higher looks fair enough. Knickerbockerglory (2.50) will have been fully wound up for a repeat and looks the one to beat. 2023 Tolworth runner-up (in the days when it was still run here) L’Astroboy looks nicely in off 132, but having been away from the track for the best part of 1000 days, can only really be watched.

Horse Racing Tips: O’Connell (Sandown, 3.35)

O’Connell (3.35) took time to warm to the task when he won here last February but in the end he won with a bit in hand, and off the back of that, did nothing wrong when second to Knockanore in the Eider three weeks later, perhaps just feeling the effects of Sandown late on, but running another super race all the same.

He started this season off on the right foot too, a staying-on third at Carlisle to Sound And Fury, held up out the back but finishing off in good style, an outing that will have set him up nicely for this. Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith have had a cracking autumn and are starting the winter off in much the same manner, and a solid round of jumping should see O’Connell home in front today.

Horse Racing Tips: Gaboriot (Aintree, 2.40)

Gaboriot (2.40) almost picks himself today. Desperately weak in the market before the Grand Sefton here last month, he nevertheless ran a lovely trial for this, beaten just two lengths by the classy Colonel Harry and doing some really good late work. The blinkers, which were given a try there, are retained, and this step up in trip can only be of benefit. This race tends to go to something nearer the foot of the weights than the top (four of the last five winners have carried 10-8 or less) and Gaboriot ticks a lot of boxes of this.

Horse Racing Tips: Kepler’s Law (Aintree, 3.15)

Kepler’s Law (3.15) was all sorts of disappointing at Newbury last week, having shaped well enough behind Lud’or at Bangor on his reappearance to think he might have got closer to that rival last weekend but no, he was even further behind him last week and the run was so poor I’m tempted to think there was something not right on the day, and write it off. The fact he rocks up here at Aintree seven days later suggests all is well, and I’m going to give him one more try under conditions that look ideal.
