Ross Burdon Racing: Big October 2025 Update

At the start of October Newmarket is usually a hive of activity, with Tattersalls yearling sales getting into full swing and Future Champions Day at the Rowley Mile all taking place in the first couple of weeks of the month.

This year is no different, with vendors and buyers from all over the world flocking to Park Paddocks to see the best bred yearlings in Europe falling under the hammer at Tattersalls showcase Book1 sale. Whilst Book1 might be a bridge too far for us this season, we will be hoping to pick up a couple of yearlings during the next couple of weeks to add to the youngster we purchased in Ireland two weeks ago at the Goffs sale there.

Ross Burdon Racing: Horses in Training Sales

As well as yearlings we will be in the market for older horses too at the upcoming Horses in Training sale which takes place after the yearlings have sold at Tattersalls. I’ve always thought its important to have a good team of older horses in the yard as they tend to be the tougher, hardier racehorses you can lean on whilst the two year olds are still coming to hand.

The yearling we bought, for a current owner already in the yard, is a Far Above full brother to a two year old debut winner who subsequently sold for six figures at the London Kensington sale just before Royal Ascot, if we could repeat that feat it would be very pleasing for everyone involved.

I would like to add another colt, and possibly a filly to the two year old string for next year. We didn’t train any two year olds this year, by design as I wanted to concentrate on older horses during my first season, and its something I very much would like to prove I can do as its so important to prospective owners that you can get a two year old ready.

Ross Burdon Racing: Waistcoat

Looking forward to this weekend, we have just the one runner, Waistcoat heads back to Kempton on Friday evening where he was recently fourth over a mile there. He drops back in trip to seven furlongs for this run, we could’ve stayed at a mile but I just think stretching him out in trip so far blunts the speed he has, being a three time winner at six furlongs.

Rhys Clutterbuck again rides, having built up a good relationship on the horse, who can be a tricky, keen going sort, winner on him at Chepstow and recently finishing fourth on him at that attempt at a mile, though he will need to be at his best to overcome the widest draw of all in stall 13.

Of the opposition, Me Tarzan of James Fanshawe’s will likely try and go forward, that is the tactic they have employed with him the last twice when hes been placed and he wears first time blinkers this time. Ocean Odyssey actually finished ahead of us in the Kempton race last month, though we have a two pound pull at the weights this time around, but was disappointing on his next start and James Owen now reaches for cheekpieces.

I actually think the main danger will come from Amanda Perrett’s Dream of Mischief who drops into the 70 grade for the first time in three years and having only being beaten a short head at this track from seven pound higher as recently as April this year. Waistcoat is in superb form at home, and while he’s never won in this grade of race I think if Rhys can get into a decent position from the draw he should run very well.
