Hector Crouch: Weekend Preview
It was nice to be back amongst the winners in the week, with a nice couple of winners for Valmont with Bay of Brilliance and Spanish Waltz both shedding the maiden tags at Goodwood and Ponte Carlo respectively. The Ralph Beckett yard look to have some nice 2yo to put away with this winter, and fingers crossed they improve next season at 3.
There’s a good day of racing on Newmarket for Day 2 of The Cambridgeshire Meeting with Bette Davis Eyes (1.15) looking to nab some black type in the Listed Rosemary Stakes over the straight mile. The well-bred filly stayed on strongly to shed the maiden tag last time out at Nottingham and she’s entitled to take her chance.
Revoir (1.50) steps back up in trip to a mile and a half after a good second last time out in France and should go well back on home shores. I said after she finished 6th at Epsom she wasn’t ready for a mile and a half, but would be later in the season, and I think she is now ready for. She’s pretty versatile and very uncomplicated so I hope she gets her head in front. She’s been a bit unlucky this season but is a really nice filly and should go well with the headgear back off.
Hector Crouch: Saturday Rides
Saturday looks a good book of rides touchwood, starting with Top Warrior (2.40) bidding to go one better than a good second last time out at Goodwood. He responded well to heavy ground, whilst wearing a first-time tongue-tie, and should go well from an unrevised mark on his preferred soft ground.
The step up in trip to a mile should suit El Matador (3.15) who is on the comeback trail after a couple of disappointing efforts. He was off the bridle a long way over seven furlongs last time out at Doncaster, doing well to finish as near as he did. The step up in trip, combined with a 3lb drop at the weights, should give him a great chance to bounce back.
David Menusier’s Lost Boys (3.50) was very unlucky last time out at Ascot when carried across the track and can make it third time lucky in the Maiden Stakes over a mile. The yard were very confident before his Ascot run, when seemingly tiring in the closing stages. The ground was very soft that day, causing him to tire in the closing stages. He will prefer Saturday’s forecast good to soft ground and should continue to improve.
Morven (4.25) was doing his best work late on in a warm maiden earlier in the month at Salisbury and should benefit from that run ahead of Fillies’ Maiden. Karl Burke’s horse will be very popular after a good second on debut, in what looks her main rival.
I finish off with two good rides for the Rooneys, with Wonderful Friend (5.00) probably a bit unlucky to remain a maiden after five runs in maiden/novice company. There’s been a couple of good runner-up efforts to his name already, but I feel he should improve for the step up in trip to seven furlongs. The form of his last run at Chester has already been franked, and the handicapper looks to have given him a chance by dropping him a few pounds. He has a big chance.
My best chance of a winner this weekend looks to be Thosewerethedays (5.35) on handicap debut for Ralph Beckett in the lucky last. He did it well enough from the front on soft ground up at Carlisle to shed the maiden tag, and looks very capable of following-up now sent handicapping from an opening mark of 82.
