After the Community Shield comes the UEFA Super Cup – another trophy at stake but surely not one to be really busting a gut over. Andy Schooler previews Wednesday’s clash of the two European heavyweights in Udine.
UEFA Super Cup 2025: PSG Preview
Tottenham v Paris Saint-Germain

In contrast to proceedings at Wembley, there’s the chance of extra time in Udine on Wednesday night – not something either manager will want ahead of the start of domestic campaigns at the weekend. Spurs play Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Champions League winners PSG are clear favourites – 1.38 to win in 90 minutes – but could they be vulnerable?
UEFA Super Cup: PSG Under-Prepared?
Having spent most of the summer at the FIFA Club World Cup, they’ve had no pre-season friendlies. Last time out, they suffered a shock loss to Chelsea in the CWC final and since then they’ve fallen out with keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Lucas Chevalier will be between the posts here but fellow new signing Illia Zabarnyi is unlikely to start and Joao Neves is suspended.
UEFA Super Cup: History
European champions have won the majority of Super Cups over the years but they’ve perhaps not as dominant as you’d expect when facing the Europa League winners (or Cup Winners’ Cup kings if you go back a bit further). The stats show it’s 29 wins from 49 attempts. That will give Spurs hope, although I’m not sure they’re in the best state to take advantage.
They finished 17th in the Premier League in what was a bizarre 2024/25 season, one which also featured their Europa League success in what was an awful game against Manchester Untied. Ange Postecoglou has seen been axed and so a rebuild is now taking place under Thomas Frank.
They did beat rivals Arsenal in pre-season but their most recent outing saw a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich, which is a worry given the quality PSG also possess. Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie have been absent for the warm-up games but both have been added to the squad for this contest. However, key absentees could be James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski (both injured).
UEFA Super Cup: Palmer on Fire
Cole Palmer really took PSG apart in that CWC final, operating between the lines of defence and midfield, and both of those Spurs players have the potential to cause problems in that area. Instead, Frank may well rely again on Pape Sarr in an attacking-midfield role.
He’s been pushed forward more under the new boss and has scored three times in pre-season. The Senegal star is 6.8 for another in this game, and 2.4 for a shot on target. However, unless PSG are really off the pace following their lack of match activity, Spurs are likely going to struggle to create much here.
UEFA Super Cup: Allez Allez A|lez
For me, the French side look likely to dominate. It’s worth remembering that before that Chelsea defeat, PSG had taken apart Atletico Madrid (4-0), Bayern (2-0) and Real Madrid (4-0) in the USA. They are 2.45 to win to nil in this one which looks perfectly fair. Given what happened to Spurs in Munich last week, the potential for PSG to rack up a few more goals is real. They famously crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in May’s Champions League final and, as already shown, were pretty prolific at the CWC.
If they are going to multiple goals, Achraf Hakimi could be a spot of value in the anytime goalscorer market. The right-back floods forward down the right and ended last season in fine form. The Moroccan has scored in six of his last 12 starts for club and country, including in big games – he netted in the Champions League final, as well as the French Cup final. He’ll likely be up against Djed Spence here, a player who prefers to play on the right. The other option for Frank is the rusty Udogie. Back Hakimi to score at 4.2.
