Trainer Ross Burdon is back with a review of his two runners from Newmarket on Friday, and looks ahead to this weekend’s King George meeting ahead and a potential trip to Ascot. Read his exclusive preview for kwiff readers below.
Ross Burdon Weekend Review: Ascot Bound on Saturday
I take my hat off to the likes of the Gosdens, O’Briens and Baldings of the world, saddling multiple runners in the same race is not easy. On Friday Ernie’s Valentine and our newest member of the stable, Waistcoat, both ran at Newmarket in the 8.10 race over seven furlongs.
Waistcoat ran much the better race, travelling very strongly through the race and hitting the front within the last furlong before getting tired in the last 100 yards or so and finishing third. Paddy Bradley, who rode Waistcoat, was sure he is a nice horse to pick up and just felt the very stiff seven furlongs of the July course found him out, suggesting we come back down to six furlongs with him next time of finding an easier track if we are to stick at seven.
Personally, I was pretty happy with the run, he settled beautifully for Paddy and travelled like the best horse in the race until stamina just found him out. He looks sure to win more races and hopefully we will be able to reward his owners for putting their trust into a new yard just setting out by getting the best out of the horse.
Ross Burdon Weekend Review: Earnest Ernie
Ernie’s Valentine again fluffed his lines on grass. He travelled very strongly in the cheekpieces he was wearing for the first time for us but when asked for an effort he folded very tamely and dropped out to the back of the field. It’s very frustrating as a trainer to watch, his work has been very good recently and he has a lot more ability than he is currently showing.
It was only last year he was competing from marks up near the eighties and hes now down to 68. we may now just wait with him until something sufficient comes up on the all-weather as he quite obviously just doesn’t enjoy racing on grass anymore.
Ross Burdon Weekend Review: King George Weekend
This week will be pretty quiet until the weekend, with Mesaafi penciled in for Ascot on Saturday and Dust Cover possibly going to Pontefract on Sunday. Mesaafi really needs fast ground and if the forecast rain arrives we may have to wait with him and go to Wolverhampton the following Thursday for a Racing League race, whereas Dust Cover would ideally want soft ground to be at his best. With rain due in the North he’s very likely to get his ideal conditions.
Ross Burdon Weekend Review: Busy BBQ
Yesterday we welcomed guests, owners and friends to the yard for our mid-season BBQ, the weather eventually played nicely and bar a small shower everyone stayed mostly dry. It was great to be able to have owners come to the yard and be able to see how far we have come in a relatively short space of time.
There was barely any food left by the end of the afternoon, which is a huge complement to our stand in chefs, who, along with some very good friends of ours all helped to make the day a great success. I’m hopeful we can make this an annual event and as the yard grows I’m sure so will both our list of guests attending and size of event.
