Cheltenham Festival Tips aside – being at Prestbury Park on Tuesday was an emotional and surreal experience. I don’t think in all my years of going to Cheltenham, that I have seen a Champion Hurdle as dramatic as what unfolded before our eyes. Reminding us yet again, there is no such thing as a certainty in racing.
St Patrick’s Day Thursday: Cathryn Fry’s Huge Cheltenham Festival Tips
Fingers crossed for less drama and more winners ahead of St Patrick’s Day Thursday – read my exclusive thoughts for kwiff ahead of the ‘greatest show on turf’.
Cheltenham Festival Tips: Galileo Dame (13.20)
Bred to be an Oaks winner and runs in the mares novice. My preference here is for Galileo Dame, who flew home to get within half a length of our friend Hello Neighbour. Joseph O’Brien’s charge gets all the allowances here.
There’s a mare in here that I expect to be better over further in time, she’s one we have highlighted as an eye-catcher previously – Mystical Goddess – she’ll come up the hill well and could be staying on at the end for a place.
Cheltenham Festival Tips: Nurburgring (14:00)
It could well be a quick fire double for Joseph O’Brien with long term fancy Nurburgring, he rapidly developed into a skilled hurdler, with a standout victory in the Galway Hurdle last August. Showed promise in his first two outings in this discipline and, while he was never in contention at Leopardstown over 17 furlongs last time, a much-improved effort is anticipated as he steps up in distance for this handicap chase debut. Cheekpieces are also reapplied.
Cheltenham Festival Tips: Karl Des Tourelles (14:40)
Another impossible handicap. However, I like one at the top of the handicap and the reserve: Karl Des Tourelles and Long Draw. Karl Des Tourelles looks made for three miles having finished a half length second to Franciscan Rock, who runs in the stayers, at Punchestown.
Long Draw got back on track with a well-earned victory in a 9-runner handicap over this course and distance in December. Despite racing off a 7 lb higher mark, he still showed solid form when finishing fourth of ten behind Thomas Mor at Wincanton (24.7f) on Boxing Day. Expected to put in another strong performance.
Cheltenham Festival Tips: Bob Olinger (16:00)
Going with a horse that’s as mad as a box of frogs but is three from three at Cheltenham and a dual Festival winner: Bob Olinger. A horse of huge ability but one that has had his problems. He’s a big price back at his favourite track. Racheal Blackmore is the perfect partner for him, she understands his quirks and rides him to suit him.
Cheltenham Festival Tips: An Peann Berg/Individualiste (16:40)
An Peann Derg, has taken his form to a new level since returning from a break in October, narrowly missing out at Wexford before landing consecutive 2m1f handicap victories at Leopardstown. His most recent win came in a valuable listed event, where he impressed with a commanding performance. The step back up in trip shouldn’t pose any problems. If My Mate Mozzie runs well on Wednesday, the form will be ranked further.
There’s also a horse that’s 9lbs out of the handicap here that had a sighter of Cheltenham back in October and has been in great form back across the sea since. Individualiste will get every inch of this trip and is running loose with Patrick O’Brien’s 7lb claim.
