With the Cheltenham Festival only weeks away now, the weekend meeting at Newbury offered some insight into what might lay ahead for some of the best horses around. Below, we will take a look at the five big winners from the card, including one who has entered the Ryanair Chase picture after a dominant display on Saturday.
Super Saturday: Big Winners from Newbury, Feb 10th 2025
Super Saturday Big Winners: Djelo
Venetia Williams’ string is in terrific order at present and has been nearly all season. Djelo was heavily backed for Grade 2 Denman Chase success and he certainly didn’t let punters down. Backed from 4/1 into 6/4 favourite on the day, the seven-year-old son of Montmartre was held up in rear early doors, but he made smooth progress through the field and took up the lead three from home.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Hitman was no match for Djelo in the closing stages and now the winner sets his sights on the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham, where he is currently 20/1 best price.
Super Saturday Big Winners: Rubber Ball
Neil King has another good one on his hands in the form of Rubber Ball, who had to dig deep to win for the second time over hurdles in the opening 2m novices’ hurdle. Taking on a pair of highly regarded runners from the Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls camps, the form could turn out to be quite strong and he showed particular guts in the closing stages as the runner-up Tutti Quanti served it right up to him.
Rubber Ball will probably swerve the Cheltenham Festival, but he could be primed for a Grade 1 at Aintree in April. It seems a step up in trip would do him no harm in time too.
Super Saturday Big Winners: Santos Blue
Dan Skelton’s Santos Blue has entered the Cheltenham Festival picture off the back of his impressive performance in the extended 3m handicap hurdle under 5lb claimer Ben Sutton. Thoroughly unexposed over this sort of trip, the eight-year-old son of Blue Bresil certainly didn’t lack for anything in the stamina department, coming from midfield to tear the field apart in the closing stages, going away at the line.
The obvious port of call after that could be the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham, where there are quotes of 25/1 at present. There should be more improvement to come.
Super Saturday Big Winners: Master Chewy
Sir Gino was a late absentee for the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase and the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Master Chewy took full advantage with a dominant display. It looks like he will be headed for the Ryanair Chase next and, although he will need to take another giant leap forward to figure, you can get 50/1 for him at the moment.
Super Saturday Big Winners: Sober Glory
The Champion Bumper is a pure lottery at this stage and another horse who has entered the conversation is Sober Glory, who won the Newbury bumper on Saturday quite convincingly. Trained by Philip Hobbs & Johnson White, the son of Mount Nelson is now unbeaten in three starts and can be backed at odds of 33/1 for the big race next month.
