Wimbledon 2025: Women’s Outright Tips

Wimbledon 2025

Andy Schooler takes a statistical look at the main contenders for the Wimbledon 2025 ladies’ singles title.

Wimbledon 2025: Women’s Outright Tips

Wimbledon 2025: Aryna Sabalenka (3.35)

World ranking (as of June 23): 1

Tournament history (most recent 1st): SF-SF-1R-1R-2R

Best Grand Slam performance: Winner, 3 times

Grasscourt form: SF Berlin

Sabalenka has been a model of consistency at the Grand Slams in recent years – in her last 14 majors, she reached at least the semi-finals of 11, winning three. However, Wimbledon remains the only Slam at which she is yet to reach the final, with the grasscourts throwing up a different challenge to the hardcourts on which she thrives.

The Belarusian prefers a most consistent, higher bounce on which she can unleash her crushing groundstrokes. That said, she remains a serious threat here – her last two visits have brought semi-final runs. The price is a worry for punters though, Sabalenka looking short enough given she is yet to win a grasscourt title in her career.

Wimbledon 2025: Elena Rybakina (5.35)

World ranking: 11

Tournament history: SF-QF-W-4R

Best Grand Slam performance: Winner, 2022 Wimbledon

Grasscourt form: QF Berlin, QF Queen’s

Rybakina is a player who knows how to win in SW19, doing so in 2022. Her serve is one of the best in the women’s game – she again leads the WTA Tour for aces this season – which is always a handy weapon to have in the arsenal on this surface. Made the semis here last year before losing, from a set up, to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Injuries and illness have too often disrupted Rybakina’s career but she has looked well of late and been playing good tennis, losing narrowly to Iga Swiatek at the French Open and Aryna Sabalenka in Berlin last week. Perhaps she’ll find someone just that bit too good here too but expect Rybakina to go close.

Wimbledon 2025: Coco Gauff (6.15)

World ranking: 2

Tournament history: 4R-1R-3R-4R-4R

Best Grand Slam performance: Winner, 2025 French Open & 2023 US Open

Grasscourt form: L16 Berlin

Can it really be six years since Gauff burst onto the scene by beating Venus Williams at Wimbledon, aged just 15? Well, it is, and the predictions made that day about her being a future Grand Slam champion have come to fruition – she added the French Open to her 2023 US Open title only a few weeks ago. Does seem to have the game for grass but she is yet to go beyond the last-16 stage in SW19. A crowd favourite whether she can go all the way here remains to be seen – her serve and forehand can both let her down at times.

Wimbledon Iga Swiatek (8.05)

World ranking: 8

Tournament history: 3R-QF-3R-4R-1R

Best Grand Slam performance: Winner, 5 times

Grasscourt form: None (plays Bad Homburg this week)

Swiatek has been Wimbledon’s top seed in each of the past three years but has never been past the quarter-finals. The best claycourter of her generation just hasn’t been able to adapt on the grass. This season she’ll be seeded only eighth after a slide down the rankings caused by the fact she’s not reached a final in more than 12 months. That hardly bodes well coming onto her least-favourite surface but at least some of the pressure is now off – focus may well be elsewhere at Wimbledon 2025. Perhaps she can slip under the radar but history suggests a title challenge is unlikely.

Wimbledon 2025: Mirra Andreeva (9.75)

World ranking: 7

Tournament history: 1R-4R

Best Grand Slam performance: Semi-finals, 2024 French Open

Grasscourt form: L32 Berlin

At only 18, Andreeva is one of the rising stars of the WTA Tour, one who has already established herself in the top 10. Big titles in Dubai and Indian Wells earlier this season helped on that front but a lack of grasscourt experience has to be a concern for potential backers. Known for her mental toughness, Andreeva did make the last 16 on debut two years ago but she failed to win a match on grass in 2024 and her 2025 debut on the surface brought defeat to Magdalena Frech, who won their deciding set in Berlin 6-0. Strikes the ball well and has variety in her game but it’s hard to feel there’s much value in her pre-tournament price.

Wimbledon 2025: Notable Outsiders

Wimbledon has thrown up some shock winners in the ladies’ singles in recent years. Last year Barbora Krejcikova won at a triple-figure price, while 2023 saw her Czech compatriot Marketa Vondrousova lift the trophy. It was therefore notable that the latter surged to the title in Berlin last week, beating Australian Open champ Madison Keys, former Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur and world number one Aryna Sabalenka en route. That is impressive grasscourt form in the book before heading to London.

Vondrousova (11.3) has an array of shots with which to win matches – she is far from one-dimensional, as she showed here two years ago. If she can stay in the groove, another title challenge could unfold. Elina Svitolina (35.0) is another player with potential at a big price. She’s been another consistent performer in the Slams over the past couple of years – she’s made five quarter-finals (as least) in the nine majors she’s played since becoming a mother.

The Ukrainian will be guaranteed big support at the All England Club, a venue at which she’s performed well in the past. Her last four visits have brought one quarter-final and two semi-final appearances, her counter-punching game being used to great effect. One of the best defenders on the tour, she is very good at getting down to low balls – a good skill to have on grass – and won’t retreat too deep when under pressure. Don’t be surprised to see Svitolina challenge again.
