US Open Tips: 2nd Round Thursday Thrillers

US Open 2025

US Open Tips: Thursday

The second round of the US Open is under way and on Thursday the focus turns to the top halves of the men’s and women’s competitions.

Iga Swiatek heads the field for the women and is up against Japanese talent Ena Shibahara, while men’s top seed Jannik Sinner is in action against American Alex Michelsen.

British hopes Jack Draper and Katie Boulter are among the others set to take to the courts at Flushing Meadows.

US Open Tips: Dolehide can build on Collins scalp

Danielle Collins’s hopes of winning a Grand Slam in her career were scuppered earlier this week with the 30-year-old exiting in the first round in New York in her final season before retiring.

And punters should keep a close eye on the player who defeated her – Caroline Dolehide.

Dolehide always looked as though she could cause Collins problems but she took things to the next level with a 1-6 7-5 6-4 win over the 11th seed.

In preparation for the US Open, Dolehide played in three hard-court events, including the Washington Citi Open in which she made the semi-finals, beating Lesia Tsurenko, Daria Kasatkina and Amanda Anisimova in the process.

The 25-year-old is an improving player and, with home support behind her, she can take down Italian veteran Sara Errani in straight sets on Thursday.

US Open Tips: Expect more from talented Thompson

Hubert Hurkacz has previously struggled to make his mark at the US Open and another premature exit could be on the cards for him at Flushing Meadows.

This is the sixth time that Hurkacz has made the second round of the hard-court major but he has yet to beyond this stage.

And he could be worth opposing against determined Australian Jordan Thompson on Thursday.

Thompson was runner-up at the Atlanta Open in July and that was one of four hard-court events in which he has played heading into the US Open.

He defeated Constant Lestienne 6-1 6-3 6-2 last time out and can follow that by beating Hurkacz, who had to battle through two tiebreaks in the first round against Timofey Skatov.

US Open Tips: Experienced Goffin can show his class

It is fair to say David Goffin’s best years are behind him but he has hit a purple patch of form during this year’s hard-court swing.

The veteran Belgian recently reached the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open with victories over seeded players Luciano Darderi, Arthur Rinderknech and Rinky Hijikata in that event.

And he was quick to dispatch promising Chilean and 22nd seed Alejandro Tabilo in the first round in New York, winning 7-6 6-1 7-5.

He will now have his sights set on a deep run at the US Open and the form of his upcoming opponent Adrian Mannarino should provide him with optimism – his French counterpart had lost 10 matches in a row going into the US Open.

With that in mind, a comfortable Goffin win is expected with the Belgian worth backing on the set handicap.

US Open Tips

Caroline Dolehide to win 2-0 vs Sara Errani @ 1.66

Jordan Thompson to beat Hubert Hurkacz @ 2.55

David Goffin -1.5 on set handicap vs Adrian Mannarino @ 1.86
