Australian Open 2025: Huge Favourites Fancied in Melbourne

Toronto Masters 2025

The 2025 Australian Open begins at Melbourne Park on Sunday as Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka attempt to continue their hard-court dominance by retaining the titles which they won at the start of last year.

Australian Open 2025: Favs Fancied in Melbourne

We’ve picked out four selections to follow in the first Grand Slam of the year. Jannik Sinner is a short price to successfully defend the Melbourne men’s singles title but the odds look fully justified given how the world no.1 went about his business last year.

Australian Open 2025: Super Sinner

Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev to win his first Grand Slam last January but he did not rest on his laurels, claiming a further seven trophies including the US Open, finishing 2024 with victories in the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals for Italy.

The 23-year-old is the most consistent operator on the ATP World Tour at present and, more importantly, he’s been drawn in the opposite half to both Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, who are on track to meet in the quarter-finals.

Australian Open 2025: Awesome Alex

While Alcaraz and Djokovic remain the most obvious threats to Sinner’s crown, Alexander Zverev is ranked higher than both and he’ll be hoping that 2025 will mark the year that he finally realises his potential by becoming a Grand Slam champion.

Zverev reached the semi-finals in Melbourne last year, blowing a two-set lead as he lost out to Daniil Medvedev, and he also made the French Open final where Alcaraz recovered from losing consecutive sets to pip him to the title. Question marks remain over the German’s mentality in the biggest moments but he signed off 2024 in fine form with a win at the Paris Masters, and he’s a threat once again from the bottom quarter of the draw.

Australian Open 2025: Sweet on Swiatek

Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff have both claimed titles in the build-up to the Australian Open but punters should not forget about Iga Swiatek, who could profit from being drawn in the opposite half to her two greatest rivals.

Despite winning four French Opens, Swiatek is much more than a clay specialist – her third Grand Slam title came in the 2022 US Open and she’s won a host of 1000-level titles on hard courts.

The Pole defeated potential semi-final opponent Elena Rybakina at the United Cup last week, before losing out to Gauff, and she’s still comfortably the most likely player to progress to the final from the bottom half of the draw.

Australian Open 2025: Kind Katie

Those looking for a big-priced punt in the women’s tournament should consider backing Great Britain’s Katie Boulter. Boulter has never been beyond the third round of a Grand Slam and it would take a serious step up in form for her to win in Melbourne but the 28-year-old has progressed steadily and she enters the Australian Open ranked a career-high 23rd on the WTA Tour.

Housed in a relatively weak section of the draw, Boulter should be full of confidence after an excellent finish to last season which included a run to the semi-finals in Tokyo and the final in Hong Kong.
