ATP Toronto Masters 2025: Andy Schooler’s Monday Tips

Toronto Masters 2025: Baena v Carabelli

Ugo Carabelli was playing in Croatia on clay on Friday night; on Monday afternoon’s he’ll be on the hardcourts of Toronto. That’s a quick turnaround given the surface switch involved and that’s before we mention the Argentine has struggled with a thigh problem for much of 2025.

He’s hardly used to playing these hardcourt events either – he’s just 2-4 at tour level on this surface. Carballes Baena has already been to the Auckland quarter-finals and the third round of the Australian Open this season. Both of those events were played on faster-than-average hardcourts and the Har-Tru of Toronto – on which the men are playing for the first time this year – is rated medium-fast.

Many of the Spaniard’s best results have come at altitude where the thinner air adds pace to the balls. While there’s no altitude of note in play here, I do think he can handle the quicker conditions better than his opponent. RCB looks an underdog worthy of support.

Toronto Masters 2025: Francisco Comesana v Damir Dzumhur

Anyone who saw Dzumhur win just three games in his Umag semi-final on Friday will be wary of backing him here. He didn’t look 100% – maybe a touch of illness – but if he’s back to full fitness for this one, I think he’s got a serious chance at odds-against. This is a player who has gone 10-5 at all levels on hardcourts this season and has beaten the likes of Jakub Mensik, Miomir Kecmanovic and Roberto Bautista Agut.

Yes, he’s also got that quick turnaround from the European clay but the Bosnian is highly experienced on this surface – two of his three ATP titles and three of his four finals have come on hardcourts. Comesana, on the other hand, has played only seven tour-level matches on hard, winning just two of them. He’s very much a clay man and could be vulnerable here if Dzumhur is OK. With Kwiff voiding all bets if a match is not completed, I think it’s worth taking a chance on Dzumhur here at 2.35.
