The 2025 tennis season sparks into life with next week’s Australian Open and there will be plenty of players on the ATP Tour that believe that they have what it takes to scale the rankings and challenge the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on the biggest stages of them all.
There will be many who try and fail but the ATP Tour is starting to become more competitive than ever before following Rafael Nadal’s retirement and the advancing years of Novak Djokovic, and there are a string of up-and-coming youngsters who may enjoy a breakthrough season.
Here we pick out some of the best candidates that could leave their past form behind and kick on to have a glittering 2025.
5 ATP Tennis Players to Watch in 2025: Jack Draper
A fit and healthy Jack Draper can be a threat to all on the ATP Tour and, providing the British number one can stay injury-free, then he should be able to challenge for a maiden Grand Slam title.
Draper is up to a career-high ranking of world number 15 thanks to a 2024 which saw him claim his first two ATP Tour titles at the Stuttgart Open and the Vienna Open before closing out the campaign with a semi-final run at the US Open.
Finding consistency will be the next target for the 23-year-old Londoner but he has all the attributes to be a dominant force, with his big serve and his powerful baseline play two potent weapons.
5 ATP Tennis Players to Watch in 2025: Arthur Fils
French tennis is in an extremely healthy place, with many budding youngsters sure to have plenty of success on the ATP Tour, and 20-year-old Arthur Fils is leading by example.
Fils, despite being only 20 years of age, is already a three-time winner on the ATP Tour and that has seen him climb up to 20th in the world rankings with the promise of plenty more to come.
The Frenchman has won titles on both clay and a hard court, while also enjoying a run to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, showing a level of versatility which makes him a threat to all.
5 ATP Tennis Players to Watch in 2025: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
Another Frenchman sure to have a bright future is the towering figure of Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who is armed with one of the most devastating serves the ATP Tour has to offer.
The 21-year-old is an ace machine, with his serve-and-volley style extremely effective, and title successes at the Lyon Open and at the Swiss Indoors have helped him rise to 30th in the world rankings.
Perricard made the fourth round on his Wimbledon debut last season and fast courts suit his style extremely well.
5 ATP Tennis Players to Watch in 2025: Juncheng Shang
China may have unearthed their biggest ATP Tour star yet in 19-year-old talent Juncheng Shang, who highlighted his potential with a maiden title on home soil at the Chengdu Open in September.
Shang made the third round at both the Australian Open and the US equivalent in 2024 – a fine effort for a teenager in his second season on the ATP Tour – and has risen to world number 50 as a result of those efforts.
The Florida resident has already hit the ground running this season, making the semi-final in Hong Kong, and being the son of a former national footballer and a former table tennis world champion means he should know the sacrifice required to get to the top.
5 ATP Tennis Players to Watch in 2025: Alex Michelsen
It is surely only a matter of time before Alex Michelsen gets his hands on some ATP Tour silverware, with the American ace having finished runner-up on three occasions, including at the Winston-Salem Open in August.
Michelsen, currently operating at world number 42, has an excellent all-round game and in 2024 he made the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time when beating James McCabe and Jiri Lehecka in Australia.
The 20-year-old is currently the second youngest player in the top 50 and should continue to progress into a potential future Grand Slam champion.
