Super League 2025 Preview

The 2025 Super League season kicks off with champions Wigan Warriors hosting Leigh Leopards on Thursday 13th February.

Matt Peet’s side successfully defended their crown with a 9-2 victory over Hull KR at Old Trafford and have limited their recruitment, with the Warriors hierarchy obviously happy with what they have.

Others have been more active, with returning Wakefield adding quality with the likes of Mike McMeeken, Tom Johnstone and Matty Russell, while St Helens will hope that Tristan Sailor, son of former dual-code international Wendell, can hit the ground running after Lewis Dodd’s NRL move.

Super League 2025: Wigan can be Grand Final winners again

After winning the 2023 Grand Final, Wigan dominated 2024, completing a treble of Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and Super League title.

The year started with a World Club Challenge victory over Penrith Panthers and, while that fixture brings prestige, the cancellation of the planned rematch with the NRL champions means Peet’s team won’t have any early distractions.

Wigan’s limited transfer action is a further sign of confidence and Jai Field, Bevan French and Harry Smith still look to be the best attacking spine of any side in the division.

It’s a quality-over-quantity approach, and should Wigan’s first-team struggle, someone will surely come through their academy for the coaches to recruit.

Leeds and St Helens are the only teams to have won three in a row and the Warriors have every chance of adding their name to that list.

Super League 2025 Tip 1 – Wigan to win Super League

Rhinos ready to challenge

Leeds Rhinos were eighth last season but pulled off one of the coups of the close season by confirming Brad Arthur as their head coach for 2025, having arrived midway through 2024.

The Rhinos missed last season’s play-offs but seem to have sorted things out after an inconsistent spell under Rohan Smith.

Arthur has had a full pre-season to work with his squad and the board looks to have added quality.

Club legend Ryan Hall returns to Headingley, but the standout recruit could be Jake Connor – can Arthur be the coach to get the best out of the enigmatic English international?

Not giving Connor a squad number between one and 13 gives Arthur the freedom to try him around the field before deciding on his best role in this Rhinos set-up.

If he finds his form, the 30-year-old could become the match-winner Leeds have been looking for.

A top-six finish seems likely, but their set-up heading into 2025 suggests a top-four place is not out of the question.

Super League 2025 Tip 2 – Leeds to finish in the top four

Airlie Birds unlikely to soar

Newly promoted Wakefield Trinity’s impressive recruitment leaves a vacuum regarding which team will be relegated and Hull FC could fill that void.

Castleford Tigers are another candidate, but it has been all change at the MKM Stadium, with Director of Rugby Richie Myler overhauling the squad.

While they have signed several recognisable names, some are arguably heading towards the ends of their careers.

The Super League’s perennial underachievers may take time to gel under new coach John Cartwright and, if the comments from several of the players who have left are to be believed, the Australian will need to change the mood both on the training ground and around the club.

The Airlie Birds finished 11th last season and could be in serious danger of relegation if they fail to hit the ground running.
