Six Nations: Comprehensive Guide to 2025 Tournament

Six Nations

It’s an early start for this year’s Six Nations 2025 tournament, with the opening match taking place on the final day of January, and promises to be another pearler.

Six Nations 2025: Comprehensive Guide

Ireland will look to retain the title they won in 2024, but they face the challenge of playing three of their five matches on the road. England, Scotland and Italy will have the advantage of three home fixtures this year, with 15 matches overall to look forward to for rugby union fans.

Recent Six Nations History

Since the tournament changed from the Five Nations to the Six Nations in 2000, England have won the trophy on the most occasions. The Red Rose have won seven titles in the last 25 years, with France, Ireland and Wales all level on six. Scotland and Italy have yet to finish top of the table during that time, with the Scots’ last Five Nations success coming in 1999.

The ultimate achievement for a Six Nations squad is to collect the Grand Slam – which means winning every one of their five matches to finish top of the table. Wales and France have collected four Grand Slams since 2000, with Ireland completing the clean sweep three times and England twice. Italy have finished bottom of the table in 18 of the last 25 Six Nations tournaments, but it was Warren Gatland’s Wales who picked up the Wooden Spoon in 2024.

Outright Six Nations Betting

After winning last year’s tournament and currently lying second in the world rankings, it’s no surprise to see Ireland at the top of the betting going into the 2025 Six Nations. Andy Farrell’s men (2.50) were denied the Grand Slam only by a defeat in France last year, and Les Bleus are the second favourites (2.85) to take the title this year.

England, who ran all three of the Southern Hemisphere giants close in the Autumn internationals, are third favourites (4.10) and will feel upbeat going into the tournament. Scotland (6.60) defeated Australia in November and will feel three games at Murrayfield will give them real hope of a successful Six Nations. Meanwhile on recent form, Wales (48.00) and Italy (140.00) look set to battle it out to avoid the Wooden Spoon.
