Andy Schooler’s Best Bets: Huge Monday Tennis Tips, October 20th 2025

Rolex Paris Masters

Andy Schooler landed two winners from three bets in last week’s Monday tennis tip and is back with his selections for the first-round contests in Vienna and Basel.

Huge Monday Tennis Tips, October 20th 2025

Sonego looks a decent underdog in Basel. I’ve written before about how he’s delivered some of his best results in slick conditions and that’s what should be on show in Switzerland this week where they play on GreenSet hardcourts. The Italian made the last 16 at Wimbledon and the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this season and he comes to Basel having played well indoors in Stockholm last week.

Monday Tennis Tips: Sonego v Fokina

Sonego made the quarter-finals and he played pretty well in that match against Ugo Humbert, winning the opening set. However, his victory bid was undermined by failing to win any of the 12 break points he created. Still, as they often say in football, it’s when you aren’t creating the chances that you should be worried.

Davidovich Fokina has looked jaded a lot during the second half of the season and I’m not sure he’s got a lot left in the tank at the moment. And it’s a long-term trend too – his record at this time of year is poor. Throw in the fact that Sonego won their only previous meeting, albeit several years ago now, and I think the outsider is worth backing here.

Monday Tennis TIps: Tabilo v Bublik

I wrote in my recent Futureproof column that Bublik might be a player to take on during the season-ending indoor swing. He’s had a fine campaign but the signs of fatigue have been on show in recent times. The Kazakh’s last two matches have been lost to qualifiers and while he did win the title in Hangzhou before that, the fact is the highest-ranked player he beat that week was the world number 88. It’s also hard to be sure of his motivation levels now, too.

It’s difficult to see Bublik qualifying for the ATP Finals – he’d probably have to win here and in Paris next week to do so – while he’s already assured of a seeding for next year’s Australian Open. In Tabilo, he’ll face a form player, one who has won 16 of his last 20 matches at all levels. Two of his losses in that run have come in a final-set tie-break; another at the hands of Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked 13th at the time.

With a decent serve, Tabilo doesn’t fear the quicker courts – in fact, all three of his ATP titles have come in fairly speedy conditions, including in Chengdu just a few weeks ago.  A fully focused and firing Bublik should win this but it’s far from guaranteed that’s what we’ll see and so Tabilo looks an interesting price.

Monday Tennis Tips: Majchrzak v Shelton

Shelton has played only one match since injuring his shoulder and being forced out of the US Open. That was lost, in pretty miserable fashion, to David Goffin in Shanghai where he failed to break the veteran Belgian’s serve. With the serve such a key shot, the American needs that shoulder in good working order and if it isn’t Majchrzak looks capable of capitalising. He’s another who isn’t fazed by quicker conditions and he arrives in Basel in good form.

Across all levels of tennis, he’s won 12 of his last 16 matches. One of the losses was to Alex de Minaur, one was via injury retirement and the other two were three-set defeats to Seb Korda. The Americans have a pretty ropey record in Europe at this time of year – many are yearning for home in this period – and with the doubts surrounding Shelton right now, the Pole may well be worth supporting in some shape or form. Sadly, at time of writing, no prices are available but it will be worth checking back before this one gets under way.
