The PGA Tour’s West Coast Swing moves on from California to Arizona this week for the loudest week in golf, the Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale.
This tournament first took place in 1932, which makes it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour, and it moved to Scottsdale’s Stadium Course in 1987.
More than 500,000 fans are expected to line the fairways over the weekend and many of them will be housed on the raucous par-three 16th, a fully enclosed stadium hole where each tee shot is greeted with cheers or jeers.
One man who hasn’t been fazed by the bumper crowds is world no.1 Scottie Scheffler, who won the Phoenix Open in both 2022 and 2023 and then went close to a ‘three-peat’ when he finished third last year.
WM Phoenix Open: Scheffler could prove impossible to stop
While he’s on offer at understandably short prices, this looks a week to side with Scheffler on his second start of the PGA Tour season at a venue where only two players have beaten him over the last three years.
TPC Scottsdale typically rewards those who grind out greens in regulation and nobody does that better than the Texas-based superstar, who has led the PGA Tour in strokes-gained tee-to-green in each of the last two seasons.
After suffering a freak hand injury over Christmas, the 28-year-old made a belated return to the Tour at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week, finishing ninth in an elite 80-man field and striking his irons better than anyone else.
While he was no match for tournament winner Rory McIlroy, that was still a hugely encouraging seasonal debut for Scheffler, who signed off with a 67 at Pebble on Sunday and is a huge threat at TPC Scottsdale this week having won nine of his last 17 events.
WM Phoenix Open: In-form Straka makes each-way appeal
For an each-way alternative, in-form Austrian Sepp Straka catches the eye.
The European Ryder Cup man will have his sights set on a place in Luke Donald’s team for this year’s match at Bethpage Black and he’s already laid down a marker to start the year with a win in the American Express last month.
Straka teed off in the final group at Pebble Beach on Sunday, and while he was disappointed with his seventh place finish, he once again struck his irons superbly.
His Scottsdale record has room for improvement, to put it mildly, but the 31-year-old is playing better than ever and it will be a shock if he fails to improve on it this week.
WM Phoenix Open: Novak looks ready to shed maiden tag
Andrew Novak should also be full of confidence ahead of his return to TPC Scottsdale, where he finished eighth on debut last year having tied the lead at the halfway stage.
A PGA Tour breakthrough looks to be coming for the 29-year-old North Carolinian, who was a runner-up in Bermuda in November, third at the Farmers Insurance Open a fortnight ago and a respectable 13th in elite company at Pebble Beach last week.
Novak is an excellent iron player who should be able to excel at Scottsdale.
