The wait is almost over for the opening round of the 124th US Open 2024 at Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina for what promises to be another exciting battle for Major glory. All eyes will be on world number one Scottie Scheffler, who already has five wins to his name this season, while the likes of Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Ludvig Aberg will garner much attention.
Scheffler is prohibitively short to win a 6th time already this season, but is there value elsewhere in some the additional markets offered on site by kwiff? Ahead of Thursday’s opening round, we have looked at the special markets on offer and picked out three selections for day one at Pinehurst’s Number Two course.
US Open 2024: Tom Terrific to Tame Spieth
There are several interesting 18 hole match bets for the opening round and one that jumps out is for Tom Kim to get the better of an out-of-form Jordan Spieth. South Korean Kim recorded a confidence-boosting tied-fourth finish at the RBC Canadian Open recently and he is heading into a Major that he has improved in each year, having finished 23rd on his US Open debut in 2022 before going T8 last year.
While the 21-year-old is on the up, Spieth is heading in the wrong direction and he missed the cut at last week’s Memorial Tournament, while his last top-10 finish came in April’s Texas Open. Kim has outperformed the 2015 US Open champion in both Majors this year and he can get the better of his American rival on Thursday.
US Open 2024: Sungjae to deliver
Another South Korean star being backed to shine in the opening 18 holes is Sungjae Im, who arrives in solid form and can outscore Russell Henley on day one. The 26-year-old has rediscovered his form after winning on the Korean Tour and he has kept that momentum going since returning to the US circuit, with three top-10s coming in the next four starts.
Henley’s approach play is solid and he has posted some good results of late, but there is just the feeling the American could be edged out by Sungjae.
US Open 2024: Fast start for Noren
There is plenty of value in the first-round leader market and Sweden’s Alex Noren is worth taking on to be in the top five after the opening 18 holes at Pinehurst. It has been a consistent PGA Tour season so far for the 41-year-old, who has come close to returning to the winners’ circle with a third-placed finish and a T9.
Noren has missed the cut just once in his last 10 starts and he has got out of the blocks quickly this year, with his first-round scoring average of 68.29 bettered only by Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.
