Less than a week after the conclusion of the US Open, many of the best players in the world head up to Cromwell, Connecticut to do battle at TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship 2024.
Travelers Championship 2024: TPC River Highlands
The final Signature Event of the season features a cut-down field of 72 players, but there is no Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman announced he would be taking a three-week break from golf on Monday after allowing the US Open to slip from his grasp when two shots clear with four holes to play on Sunday.
The headline acts this week include Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay while PGA Tour U winner Michael Thorbjornsen will also make his debut. Keegan Bradley will defend the title he won last year with a record 23-under par score alongside other recent champions Schauffele (2022) and Jordan Spieth (2017).
Travelers Championship 2024: Take a chance on Aberg
Ludvig Aberg held a one-shot lead halfway through his US Open debut, which was only his third Major championship. Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how far the Swede has come in only one year on the PGA Tour. He finished tied-24th in only his second event as a professional here last year and has since shown he has a liking for classical courses. Aberg is one of the most in-form players on the Tour and possesses all the requisite tools to tame this Pete Dye-designed course.
An elite ball-striker with a great short game, the Swede has also been gaining strokes on the rest of the tour with his putter, ranking 43rd in that department. Only seven players who will tee it up in Connecticut rank higher than Aberg in strokes gained approaching the green and he seems less prone to suffering a post-major hangover than some of the other fancied names. He finished T10 and T5 in the tournaments that followed the Masters and US PGA Championship earlier this year.
Travelers Championship 2024: Cantlay can tame the shortest Tour track
River Highlands is the shortest course played all year on the PGA Tour and while this tournament hasn’t always been a shootout, it’s pretty common for players to threaten to break 60. It was here in 2016 that Jim Furyk shot 58 — still the lowest round in PGA Tour history. One player who is some way short of being the longest off the tee, but should have a good chance to top the leaderboard is Patrick Cantlay. The Californian has an excellent course history with six straight top-15 finishes and his showing in last week’s US Open suggests he is rediscovering his top form.
Cantlay shot 60 at River Highlands as an amateur and has finished 15-15-11-13-13-4 at the course since he returned from his back injury. The 32-year-old has a solid overall game with no real weaknesses and that should put him in contention on the final day again, as he was when finishing tied-third at Pinehurst. Incidentally, that was his best Major performance and he should be ready to kick on from it, particularly as he will still be relatively fresh after missing the cut at The Memorial the week before.
Travelers Championship 2024: Conners could be a sleeper
And for a pick at bigger odds, don’t sleep on Corey Conners, who had a solid US Open and has been a model of consistency this season. The 32-year-old tied for ninth place at River Highlands last summer, the same position he took at Pinehurst, and he ranks second only to Scheffler for strokes gained approaching the green, which is considered a key metric here.
