Tour Championship 2024: Xander to Claim Huge Windfall at East Lake

Tour Championship 2024

PGA Tour players tend to find it tough to stay in touch with Scottie Scheffler at the best of times, but each of the other 29 competitors at The Tour Championship 2024 will be handing the world number one a head start at East Lake in the chase for the FedEx Cup and a winner’s prize of $25 million.

Not surprisingly, the Masters champion is a short price to come out on top this week, but there are others intent on making a big impression as the PGA tour season reaches its climax. His chief rival at the Georgia course is likely to be US PGA and Open champion Xander Schauffele, but the course has undergone a huge renovation since Viktor Hovland won there last

year, so it could be an intriguing test.

Tour Championship 2024: Bank on Xander

So punters are not presented with the usual level playing field this week, but if anyone is going to catch Scheffler it is likely to be the man he deposed as Olympic champion earlier this month, Xander Schauffele, who can be backed at 2.90. The recently crowned Open champion has been in superb form for much of the year and has two shots to make up on the leader, which judging by the consistent levels he has displayed, should not prove beyond him.

While designers have ripped up East Lake and virtually started again in the last 12 months, Schauffele won at the venue in 2017 and has finished in the top five in each of his last five visits, a run that includes three runner-up spots. His fifth at last week’s BMW Championship means he has maintained his focus and that looks a strong foundation for a big challenge for the huge first prize.

Tour Championship 2024: Reliant Rory

Rory McIlroy has six shots to make up on Scheffler, which makes another FedEx Cup triumph a huge ask, but the Northern Irishman has enough strong East Lake memories to help him to a top-five finish, for which he can be backed at 2.15. McIlroy was an encouraging 11th at the BMW Championship last week and his quest for a respectable finish is aided by the fact one of the players above him in the rankings, Hideki Matsuyama, had to retire last week with a back injury.

Three course wins show that McIlroy flourishes in the Tour Championship environment and he will feel he is not done with this year’s FedEx Cup just yet.

Tour Championship 2024: Super Scott

Australia’s Adam Scott is a further shot in arrears but his form suggests he could be worth an investment to also get into the top five at 4.65. The 2013 Masters champion was runner-up to Keegan Bradley at last week’s BMW and also occupied that position at the Scottish Open before finishing 10th at The Open at Royal Troon.

Scott won at East Lake way back in 2006, but the fact he has visited just twice since 2016 should not be a big handicap on the renovated course and he can bring his A-game to the season finale.
